HI-Point... I'm a believer

No bias please, but that post here on THR testing the Hi-point carbine against the Ruger 9mm impressed me. Gun store has a new camo Hi-point for $169, seems like a great deal. I could afford the Ruger if need be but why bother? Comments sought. Thanks

The Hi Point looks cheesy, feels cheesy, and looks poorly made. I can't vouch for durability or ease of cleaning and disassembly, but I will say one thing...
I have shot three of them (all of them owned by one friend....he loves them), and I've never seen nor had one choke on me, and they put the bullets exactly where you were aiming.
Can you get more bang for your buck? Sure, a milsurp Mosin for $89. Can you get a cheaper reliable carbine that will shoot 9mm? NOPE.

As low cost as it is, why not? That's the reason I bought the 9mm Comp. Wanted to see first hand what all the flak was about and it was cheap. My gun has been working great. Berea is next weekend.

telewinz,
If you're willing to wait for a local gunshow, they usually have them there for $139, last I checked.

I have both a Ruger PC9GhostRing and a Hi-Point Carbine. I prefer the Ruger because it has proven to be ALWAYS reliable and a lot more durable than the Hi-Point. I've replaced the rear sight assembly twice on the Hi-Point because of it getting bent up a bit after getting knocked around. And the Hi-point has choked on some hollowpoints, mostly feeding failures. However I still enjoy shooting the Hi-Point because it is just as accurate as my Ruger and it has less felt recoil as well. I have no regrets about buying the Hi-Point and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in it. You can't beat the price or the lifetime warranty. (Both times I called to have the sight replaced, I got it within a week.)
BTW- I also have a Kel-Tec SUB2000 which seems to be a fine alternative to the Hi-Point as an economical carbine. It just doesn't fit me comfortably and the sights leave a bit to be desired.

As far as the Hi-Points go, I've always said the 9mm carbines are neat for the price.
But the pistols are NOT.

I will be going to the PA gunshow next weekend so I guess I'll wait till then, besides I HAVE TO buy something. If I can locate an excellent Hakim, that will be the one and if I can get a used Hi-Point 995 (lifetime warranty:) ) it will go in the bag also. Just wish Hi-Point would get with the program and make the 995 capable of excepting hi-capacity magazines. Its a no-brainer! The HI-Point is the "Timex" of carbines, not the best but it's cheap, reliable, accurate, impact resistant, recomended to shoot +P+ ammo, and has a lifetime (any owner) warranty. Now how many firearms brands can say that at ANY price. Damn, after reading all this, I may not wait!:D

Im sure it wont be long before Mr.Grape Crusher gets here so ill get my comments out of the way.First,i wish i could see a camo in person! As hard as ive tried ive never been able to locate one.Second,i wish the gun shows around here sold em for $139.00.Here they charge suggested retail or more! I know SOG stocks em,maybe ill call and check availability.Ditto to telewinz comments on hi-caps.Ive emailed them with the suggestion of using Sten or Uzi mags or the like but heard nothing.

Don't they make rifle kits for handguns now? I've seen kits to make 1911s and Glocks into carbines, that might be a good alternative also. I am not going to bash Hi-Points because even though I had the carbin with laser and comp, I never shot it. I wish I had shot it now because so many people seem to rave about them. I didn't like the feel of it so I sold it. Also it only holds 10 rounds so for all the added bulk, it holds less ammo than any of my double stack 9mm pistols. I would not consider it a viable self defense weapon due to limited capacity and the fact that I couldn't bring myself to trust it, no matter how many rounds it might fire without jamming. I just don't trust that it wouldn't jam when I needed it most.
If I wanted a 9mm carbine for some reason, I think the I would want something like a lightweight and thinner Ruger Mini 14 but in 9mm and with 30-40 round mags and a 16" bbl with folding buttstock. That could be useful. A Hi-Point is a toy, not a weapon. If someone is shooting at me with a Hi-Point on the other hand, it is a deadly assult rifle.

I have one and have taken it to the gun range twice.......good accuracy and no malfunctions yet......a very good plinker, but, as a previous poster said, lousy sights, very fragile, and when you adjust them, you are kind of afraid they will fall off...........as a cheap plinker with cheap ammo, can't be beat..........accuracy is better than you would think......broke the stock and hi-point sent me a new one with no questions asked.......they cost $179 up here where I bought mine, camo is $10 more..........

Not to derail this, but how about the Marlin Camp rifles. Marlin makes a tough, accurate product and the guns use plentiful S&W or 1911 mags. Any downsides to these nice wood rifles?

Had a marlin camp rifle years ago but their are 3 faults with the Marlin 1) microgroove rifling...poor for lead bullets 2) no longer made 3) $300-350 at the gun shows for used marlins. I can get two 995 Hi-points for that and it will outshoot the Marlin.
That the Hi-Point carbine "is a toy" shows great bias and a snobbish attitude. "Don't confuse YOU with the facts" as I said before value is my main consideration, if the Ruger or Cobray were the best values out there, I'd consider them. In the past I've owned the Marlin Camp Rifle (twice) and the semi-auto Uzi. As I recall they all cost a great deal more than the Hi-Point but didn't outperform it in reliability or accuracy. But if price were the main consideration, a person could do worse than the Hi-Point 995

I just got the Kel-Tec 2000 in .40 caliber. It is just a blast to shoot, accurate and powerful. The sites are unusual but I have learned to love em. Target acquisition is fast and easy. Oh, and by the way, it is very tactical/cool looking(!)
