Thoughts on the new XD .45

From what Ive heard most people like these guns. Does anybody have the tactical 5" version in .45? I dont forsee tupperware ever retiring my 220, but 14 rounds of .45 with a 5" barrel is a nice combo. Never having handled one of these do they feel like a 2x4 otherwise known as a glock? Opinions welcome.

I handled the 4" yesterday and have to say I liked it a lot, in spite of the fact it has no manual safety or hammer (hey, I prefer 1911s). It fits my hand much better than a Glock, and it looks better as well. I like the fact that it comes with a holster, mag carrier, loader, and two mags. Also, 14rds of .45 is a nice package.

Just another future purchase to add to "the list."

I bought the first 5" tactical XD-45ACP that my local gun shop got in stock back in February. It was kind of funny, actually. I had people telling me "The tactical models won't be on the shelves until June." (which was SA's original estimate) and I could say "No? Well, maybe I should take this one back then."

What would you like to know? I love mine. I've read where some people have had some issues with certain types of ammo, but mine has eaten everything I've thrown at it without a single malfunction in a couple of thousand rounds. It's well-balanced, points quick, and feels great in my hand. It's far more accurate than I am. It field strips and cleans easily and quickly, and with the new Melonite finish (which is the same as they use on Glocks - only with a different trade name) durability or rust won't ever be a major issue.

I like the combination of a grip safety and a trigger safety on the same gun. When I first bought it, I thought the 'loaded chamber indicator' and the 'cocked indicator' (little buttons that pop up, basically) were mostly just gimmicks, but once you get used to them you realize that they're actually pretty handy things to have and genuinely innovative.

Some people refer to the XD series as being revolutionary. I wouldn't go quite that far, but they are an evolutionary step, in my opinion. Basically they combine some of the best features of some very good guns, mix in a few new ideas, and put it all in an extremely reliable, affordable, and attractive package. Tough to beat a deal like that - especially now that it's available in .45ACP.

I have an XD9 Tactical and the service XD45ACP.

As to the original question, what they feel like, if you've held an XD9 (service or tactical), then you've basically held an XD45. The engineering to make a double-stack .45 in basically the same frame as their 9mm is truely amazing. There is a slight difference in finger reach between the 9mm and the .45, but most people don't really notice it or it's not enough to matter.

I love the XD45ACP, sold my SA Lwt Loaded Champion 1911..... 'nuf said:D

My son has the "Service" 4" model. I have not fired it yet, but I like it, a lot. I might even consider trading my GLOCK 21 in on the 5" version. And I like my GLOCK!!!

I'm looking at the 5" model in the duo tone. I haven't yet actually held an XD in any caliber so I really dont know what they feel like. From what others have said, they dont feel like a USP or glock.

Card, how much lighter does it feel than say a 1911 or a sig, and how are follow up shots? I don't mind heavy recoil at all but I don't like the excessixe muzzle flip that you sometimes get with lightweight tupperware pistols.

lightweight tupperware pistols.

I ain't nitpickin', but... "Tupperware" refers to the old plastic box that the Glocks used to come in, not the plastic pistol itself... as I was once corrected over on GT.

Just so you know... :neener:

The XD45ACP is about the same weight as my Lwt Champion, around ~30oz. As for muzzle flip, not much flip with a .45, more of a push back into your hand, but the recoil of the XD45 is similar to the G21 recoil. Both are very "soft" shooters, IMHO. Follow-up shots are not a problem at all. The attached pic is 1mag at 6yds, rapid fire.

I was browsing my local gunshop not really looking to buy and I saw the last 4" XD-45 package he had. I picked it up and immediately fell in love with the grip. I feels like my 1911.....just slightly wider. I bought it and love it. I have pushed around 300 rounds of fmj down the barrel without any problems. I really like this gun and have even carried it IWB. The holster was wrong for this gun but I am going to order another Milt Sparks VM2 like I have for my 4" 1911 but for the XD. It is accurate and easy to shoot. Here are my targets.
Please excuse the scratching to tell them apart.
