I've got a good condition 1970s Browning Hi-Power. I'm wondering if this particular gun is made to work with JHP ammo.

Do the new hi-powers have something different in their design to make them accept JHP's better than the older ones?

The older Hi Powers may or may not work with JHP's. There is a hump in the feed ramp of the earlier that was removed in later models like the MK II and MK III. I don't knw the dates how ever, but if you see a hump, it may be finicky with JHP's. Go here and all will be revealed.

I had a hi power made in the 70's,it
seemed to prefer hollow points that
are rounded. It didn't like any of
cor-bon hp's,it prefered Federal
115gr hollow points.The part # is
9BP,it can be found in the Federal
classic ammo line.

I have a friend who has a Hi Power that does not like JHP's. He now loads in with Expanding Full Metal Jackets. Corbon Powerball would also be a good choice in hollow points don't work.

Try some Remington standard JHP's. You can get a box of them at Wall Mart for not too much. If Remingtons won't feed then there is little chance of anyting else working well.

A good gunsmith can smooth out that hump in the feed ramp.

Hello. As has been noted, the earlier classic type Hi Powers have the humped feed ramp and can be picky as to which JHP's they will feed. That style ramp was abandoned with the advent of the Mk II and Mk III, both of which feed about any style JHP. A gunsmith familar with Hi Powers can remove the hump and the older gun should feel a much wider range of JHP ammo.

Best.

I have a 1969 HiPower that was my dad's service weapon as a cop...it's been fed hollow points it's whole life and eats them up without a problem.

Of the 4 HPs that I've owned, I've had 2 that have had humped feedramps. I have yet to have a problem with any JHPs -- I should note, however, that the feed ramps had been polished.

In my experience, the HP will eat anything that says 9mm Luger on the headstamp.

If you do experience hangups, I would follow the instructions on Mr. Camp's website, and LIGHTLY polish and throat the barrel.

I encountered this problem with my BHP and Winchester Silvertips, and it turned out that one of the magazines was the culprit. I thought it was factory, but it turns out I was mistaken... switched to a Browning factory mag and everything was back on track.
