Can the Browning BAR be changed to top-feed?

I mean the commercial one, not the WWII classic. :)

I'm wondering if the floor could be sealed up, and the top milled out to allow top-loading into a fixed magazine like a typical bolt action.. seems it would slick up the carrying of the rifle some.

Is it doable, or does the bolt design not really allow it?

No, it is not possible withouth a major redesign; the locking lug is located at the top, exactly there where loading port would be. check diagram (last pic) at this link for explanation http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg36-e.htm
