Do those reciever cover mounts for AK's actually work? I'm interested in picking one up.

No personal experience but from what I've read they do not hold zero and are not a stable optics platform. Do you have a side rail? If not I would probably go with ultimak or have a side rail installed before getting the rceiver cover.

There's a place called crankyfarmer.com that has one that uses two screws in the back to lock the cover so it can't rock and affect POI. If I were going to try one, it'd probably be that one.

What I want to find is an inexpensive handguard or gas tube with a rail so I can mount a red-dot sight on it. I know Ultimak makes a good one, but I'm cheap, I hate to lay out a hundred dollars for it. Especially not knowing what difference(if any) it would make in accuracy.

why not just get a straight weaver mount and put it through your wood guard?

I'm also waiting on the prices to drop on all the newer style accessories. Can't justify $100 for a piece of zytel.

If you really, really want to mount a scope over the receiver, and don't want to use a Russian-made scope, you can get a siderail mount that comes to a Weaver rail on top. My personal preference would be Eastern-bloc siderail mount scope, if I were going with a magnified optic. I had a POSP 4x24 on my SAR-1 for a while, with very good results:

I recently sold it because I decided I'd rather have an unmagnified optic on the rifle, and am saving my pennies toward a Kobra:

What is a Kobra going for now? I've heard good things about them.

And no kidding about the price of many accessories! A polymer handguard for HOW MUCH?!?

I tried one, had two screws on back to stabilize. worthless IMO. I then went back to the siderail and the rusky scope. Works well after a trip to the gunsmith. Siderail was not level with the bore ( Romanian SAR-1). Good luck & good shooting.

This is the cheapest place that I've found the synthetics and I really don't care for the look. Close to $80 with shipping.

You may be able to try this on the wood if you want.

i agree. i tried a receiver cover mount years ago and it really was crap. now i have a cheap famous maker red dot attached to a k-var side rail mount that i found a good deal on. i've used it quite a bit on my sar-1. it sits very high but i like my head straight without any bend in my neck for fast, close can killing with a red dot. btw, the famous maker sight actually works pretty darn well considering that i only spent $30 on it. came with not one but two batteries.
