Today while turkey hunting, I got to feed a deer...

Just thought this was cool and had to share.

This morning I got into my stand and was settled just a few minutes before 5am. Just as I busted out my cheerios (actually the cheap honey nut toastie o's in the bag) when I felt eyes on me. It was just starting to get light enough to see, and there he was, a very young deer peering in the window of my blind. I sat very still and he just didn't seem to mind, but he could smell something. I figured out it was my cheerios. So very gently, I took one and flicked it out the window. He was a bit startled, but found it and ate it. Then he just stood there. So I flicked another one out and another and another. If something hadn't startled him, I bet he would have eaten all my breakfast.

Wow - after that, I don't care if I even get out there again let alone get a turkey.

Cool story...but I wouldn't want any wild animal getting into the habit of getting fed...especially if you plan to hunt them in the future.

One incident of being fed by a human (who the deer apparently couldn't even see or smell) isn't going to do any serious harm. I wouldn't worry about that.

On the other hand, what a great memory you'll have to hold on to. I've had a couple of experiences like that in the woods, most notably (for me) the time I got to watch two bucks fight over a doe, and those are things that will stick with you forever. Almost feels like you've been blessed, doesn't it? (I'm not a religious guy - but that's what it feels like)

Oh, and if you ever want to draw a deer in that close to you again? Two words: Peanut Butter. :)

Wow! I am just green with envy. I met a horse that loved fruit loops, but I didn't know deer ate cereal.

Nice story. I've had deer come pretty close while turkey hunting, but I've never fed one.

I have also been close to deer, but never that close. I bet that was such a great feeling. You're very lucky. Thanks for sharing.

My buddy fell asleep on his turkey stand this year. I was 60 yards away and watched a deer walk to about 10 yards away from him and she got spooked when he snored and ran away!
Not a turkey to be seen that day.

I fed a chipmunk half of my sandwich (out of my hand) at at time while back in camp. After lunch I called in a hen turkey to within 3 feet of my partner who was 10 yds ahead of me in the ready fire position. The darn gobbler with her never did show himself. :banghead:

Good story.

The deer at my lease got the real deal lately. 30-gallon corn feeder (running for turkey) had got toppled over either by thunderstorms or cattle when I was there last Monday. In the mud, I noticed some of those itty-bitty deer tracks. :D
