H&K G36

My friend fired one while he was stationed in Germany, and he wants to know if it is possible to acquire one (semi-auto version) in the States. If so, about how much should he expect to pay?

I checked gunbroker and could find nothing of the sort. All googling leads to airsoft guns.

HK imported the SL8 for a while, but has since discontinued the rifle. The SL8 was internally a G36, but due to the importation restrictions was forced to change many of the features to comply with the laws. The SL8 can be converted into an almost exact copy of the G36 however, but will cost you. I believe the total conversion including the rifle will run just over $2000. Occasionally you can find them on gunbroker for sale as well. Just an FYI, there have been reports of the receiver on the SL8 being prone to cracking as well. Here are some links with more information on the conversion and what it entails.

Just an FYI, gunbroker has one listed for $4,600, but that seems awfully high. You could probably get a better deal if you look hard enough.

The G36 is one of a very short list of rifles that could potentially challenge the AR-15's popularity with the tactical crowd, but they wont import us.

G36 was the basis of XM8, unfortunately that project seems to have gone no where.

fyi, asking price on SL8s on gunsamerica/gunbroker is $1900-$2400. that's for the stock (grey, 10rnd mag, non-folder thumbhole stock) version before you do any customization.

i have an SL8 and it is a fantastic weapon. i actually just put it up for consignment yesterday (it should be on gunbroker monday or tues). it is superior to the ar15 in many respects, but big picture, i gotta stay with ARs.

i was never interested in the G36 conversions because i actually LIKE the thumbhole stock. it's really quite nice. most people only evaluate the stock in the context of the crackpot importation restrictions, so they've already made up their mind that they hate it before they even see it. if mcmillan or H.S. precision made that stock, it would probably be very popular.

SL8s will be no different than semi-auto AUGs 5 years from now. if you want one, get it now.

You can find SL8's already converted in the mid 2000's. Note, that these one's usually don't include the dual optic.

Just FYI, I did some research on the G36's for our Tac team commander before I retired. The general consensus was that there were some durability problems. We decided against them.

There is a tac team in CT that is using G-36 rifles. I saw some footage of them 'on the job' on the news. Didn't catch whether they were a state team or a local team.

I found several folks that had them and they all said that they were reliable. The chief compaint was with the fore ends, carry rail, etc. We stayed w/ MP5s and M4s.
