I have finally had it. I cant bare to see my sar 1 with that nasty redish whatever you want to call it stock.

So I cant figure out if I want to refinish the existing stock or if I should go and buy a brand new stock set. Questions that only you high roaders can answer.

1. Is the sar stock wood worth my time refinishing?

2. Kvar seems to be out of romanian WOOD stock sets, where else can I get one?

How to go about refinishing the stock set. thank you very much, PHAk47

Refinish. Cheap, easy, fun, you can do it to your satisfaction.

Take an orbital sander with about an 80 or 100 grit and sand it off to the wood.

Refinish with either a minwax tung oil or a poly.

If you don't like that, then get a new stock set. But you aren't going to do any harm if you do try to refinish it.

Alternatively, try the camo paint from wal mart. I camo'd my AK and it looks nice.

I would personally refinish the wood myself, i think you would have fun doing it and you would also have alot of pride in the final product when it was through.

I just today finished a refinish job on my Romanian kit's stock set, and it looks really nice. That lacquer is tough, so you would benefit from using a paint stripper first thing, then a power sander to get the rest off and smooth the wood a bit.
After sanding I applied a coat of Danish Oil sealer, and we'll be waxing the stock later to protect it.
The laminate wood is really beautiful once some oil varnish gets into it, picks up the light like a gemstone.

Once upon a time I had a SAR in which the original wood had been refinished.. it was absolutely beautiful. Commie guns had no right looking so nice. ;)

so another vote for refinish. :)
