$180 used maverick 88

I went to a pawn shop saturday to see what a used maverick ran for knowing that academy sold them for $140 new. The pawn shop had the exact one I wanted and the tag said $179. I thought this was some kind of joke. Then I saw a glock 23 for $520 when academy has them for $496. They said the lowest she could go on the maverick was the price academy had it for new. She said it was a special "topper" edition. I know academy has the best prices but if you can't beat there prices with a used gun you don't deserve to be in bussiness. Then I went to the one 5 min. down the road, with academy in between them, and found the exact same thing. I feel sorry for the ones who actually buy from them.

Pawnshops around here (SW MI) are the same. Battered used guns priced higher than chainstore new ones, I've quit going.

I noticed the exact same thing but I kept quiet. Even some of the big bad@$$ gun shops have their prices way too high. Asking 700 for beretta 92 when academy has 'em for $580 (which is still high for me).
Same thing with the mavrick and glocks.
I still prefer gun shows overall.

You can get some pretty good deals on guns at Pawn Shops here in Mississippi. Folks around here don't play when it comes to their guns. Pawn Shops like your talking about would go under after a week if they were playing the kinds of games with the consumer like ya'll are talking about.

That's kinda steep for a used Maverick.
IIRC, Maverick doesn't have a "Topper" edition. Seems to me that the "Topper" was an H&R or NEF model designation.
Maverick has "Field" Models with long vent-rib barrels, and "Security" models with short (18"-20") barrels.
Security models start at $199 MSRP.

That sound's kind of high to me as well. I saw a used mossberg500a with 28 inch barrel and wood stocks for 170 here in Nor Cal SF bay area.
Most Pawn shops have negotiable price policies and Layaway. So I would think you could make a CASH offer and get him down in price.
Personally I would go with a new Mossberg 500A combo 18 1/2 and 28 inch barrels or the long mag tube 20 inch barrel they go on sale here at 240$ each at least once a month.

I paid $100 for my Mav 88 used and it looked like new. That's crazy pricing. Walk away.

My 88 20" (Security?) was $135, practically unfired.
Not terribly suprised though, pawn shops have crap prices. I'm always amazed when people talk about the great deals they've found, because I've never seen a pawn shop charge less than 10% over MSRP, and that's on used guns.
Academy isn't always the cheapest, but they do have pretty good prices, and the last one I went to had a relatively good selection - even had a couple Bushmasters!

Look up the word PAWN = a piece of the least value. Pawnbrokers seem to think that all customers show up uninformed and in a hurt. If you take a $500.00 rilfe in to borrow money on you get about 15 percent of the value. If they are selling the same rifle they will sell at 115 - 125 percent of the MSRP, no matter the condition. I have found no real bargins in the PAWN Shops around my neck of the woods. I stay away. :cuss:
