Favorite ammo for MK II?

Just finished putting the first box of ammo through the MK II and I have to say it was a somewhat frustrating experience.

I was using the Wally-World box of 550 Federal HP.....about every 8th shot would misfeed.

The bullet would fire and the empty case would start to eject and get hung up on the next round. The "new" round would then get hung up in the action and would be bent at the bullet/casing point and would therefore be unusable.

I'm new to rimfire.......what's the ammo of choice for everyday target shooting?

A frequent and sound recommendation for Ruger enthusiasts--especially during your 20,000 round break-in period (;) ), is CCI Minimags. They never jam. They cost a little more than the bargain-box stuff, but they never jam. And after you shoot it good & loose, you can try that cheap stuff again.

PS--the standard response you'll get is "every 22 likes different ammo." And that's true, but if you don't want to mess around and would rather just shoot, start with the minimags.

Did you thoroughly clean and lubricate the gun before using it? (I am assuming it's new). I don't know what Ruger uses as their preservative for new guns but it's a bear to get off and it's on everything. Also, one box of ammo isn't really much of a break-in period. The problem may go away after a few hundred more rounds.

If the gun is used, the type of failure you are having is typical of a damaged or worn extractor. Easy to replace and pretty cheap.

As far as ammo goes, no caliber of gun is more ammo-sensitive than .22 rimfire. You should try as many brands of ammo as you can find until you see which works best for your particular gun. Oddly, in many MkIIs (mine included), some of the premium target ammo brands like Eley don't work the best. A lot of folks in my club swear by CCI standard velocity but my gun hates it. Same for Federal Gold Medal (horrible accuracy). Probably the best-performing in my gun is Eley Practice, which is pretty cheap.

Another vote for Minimag. It's clean, doesn't jam and has proved to the most accurate common .22 ammo in all my .22s (rifle and pistol).

I did clean the firearm when I bought it (new), I guess I just need to be more patient until the break in period is further along.

The sad thing about this particular misfeed problem is that the ammo actually shot pretty accurately, when it shot.

I'll try some of the CCI on the next go around....I've got some Remington that I'm going to try out this weekend

Norton - I had the EXACT same problem with my new MkII target. The action was VERY stiff for a .22 and I think that may have been the cause of the problem.

extremely irritating.

I found that CCI minimags and Stingers fed reliably while pretty much nothing else did.

Now that I've put almost 1K rounds through it, it works a lot better (the action is a lot looser). I get an average of 1 jam per 2 clips using bulk pack ammo. I'm not sure if that's normal, but it is acceptable to me for a plinking pistol. If the problem persists indefinitely I may eventually put a new extractor in it, but examining the extractor myself it didn't look damaged or anything...

My slabside loves Mini-Mags and Wolf Match Target. I just received a Volquartsen extractor and spring today that will hopefully help it eat just about anything else. :p I've had good accuarcy with some other types of ammo, but they dont extract too well.

Now......to find yzguy's instructions..... :uhoh:

My 22/45 decided to act up yesterday. At least one malfunction per magazine. I got so frustrated I just put it away. It'd either stovepipe or just not feed the round from the magazine. I've had more than 1K rounds between cleanings and this time it's only had about 500.

Guess I'll strip it down and have a looksie.

Yesterday ran some 4-5 year old ammo I had laying around in a big clear jug (mostly bulk-pack Remington and Federal with a few of the cruddy Winchester thrown in - don't know how that happened) through my MkII. There were some misfires due to bad primers but other than that, the little gun just kept chugging along.

Of course, I bought the gun used, so maybe it has undergone a sufficient 'break in' period, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Only problem is that .22LR blowbacks get pretty cruddy very quickly. Still, I only do a really good cleaning every once in a long while. It doesn't really seem to care.

I've been shooting a brick a week of the Wally World Federal Specials through my Ruger for the last year now w/ great results.

I ran a coupla hundred hi velocity rnds thru my MkII on break in. Since then, I've been using Winchester Dynapoints from Walmart with great success. They're awesome for the price in my 10/22 and work just as well in my MkII
