I picked up a M28-2 with a 6" barrel yesterday because I have been dying for one of the big frame Smiths. It is in very good condition with just a few light scratches on the cylinder.

A few minutes later, I managed to pick up a M27-2 with a 5" barrel. This gun is excellent, and the trigger is superb both double action and single action. How rare are the 5" 27's? I knew they were out there, but until yesterday I hadn't seen any.

Could anyone tell me when these were made?

How much should I have paid for these, btw? I think I did good, but I could use the positive reinforcement until the CC bill comes!

Great aquisitions . may yet look for a M28 myself. I was lucky enough to get my ''replacement'' M27 earlier this year .... I did have an early one way back ... also 5" barrel.

IMO the finest set of proportions for a wheel gun ... 4" a tad short ..... 6" a tad long!!

Mine has an SN of 349xxx ...... and there is paperwork to support its purchase originally in early 1977 .... the year I am led to believe the 5" went out of production. Your SN suggests it is one of the earlier 27-2's .... but hard to date it ... by guesswork maybe it was around early 70's?

Sorry Kel ... quite forgot to add . I paid $400 ... a tad high but . as it was boxed and in A1 condition . it was a ''had to have'':D

KelBench 400, according to The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson-2nd edition your S&W model:

28-2 with serial S2259XX was made between 1961-1962

and your 27-2 with serial N2008XX was made between
1975-1977. Sorry, but the book IS NOT more specific~

Book price goes from $175 in good condition to $375 for
NIB on the model 28, and

from $200 (good) to $450 NIB for the 27; with a $500
premium for the rare four screw model.

And on yes, the 5" is the rarest of the barrel length's
given for the model 27.

Hey Phil, even though the 4" Smith model 27 was in
production for a shorter period of time, it seems like
I saw more of them in my locale than I ever did the
5" model 27!:uhoh: Back in about 1977 I was lucky
enough to obtain a NIB nickel 5" model 27, with
the 3 T's (target grips, target hammer, and target
trigger).

Funny thing, I obtained this gun by trading a LNIB
Ruger model 77-R in .338 Winchester Magnum. We
traded even; and I didn't even have to pay sales
tax!:uhoh: How about them apples?

*FootNote- the only 5" barrel .357 Magnum any
more rare in my locale would be the Colt Trooper
MK-III. I've only seen one in my lifetime!

But, my favorite N-frame Smith is the old 6" model
28; with an "S" serial prefix, when I can find 'em.

I have a 4" model 27-3 just like Phils. It's a fantastic shooter but I'm selling it to a friend. I know it doesn't make much of a difference but I'm partial to the P&R guns. I'll be looking to find a P&R 4 inch 27-2.

I had a chance last year to buy a 98% 4 inch 27-2 for $350. I had to "think about it". I went back a couple of days later and it was gone. I'm still kicking myself about that one.:rolleyes:

The 3.5 inchers are kinda cool to. I have one of those that dates to 1956.

Hey, anytime you can pick up an N frame, go for it. I personally prefer the 3 1/2" & 4" .357's, and the 4" M29/24's. I'd also really like a 4"er in .45 LC someday in the future. Thanks a lot for those pictures.

I should finally get my 3 1/2" '54 model back to S&W for a refinish in a month, then I'll borrow a camera for pictures. I don't know if it will be as nice as K22's, and I don't have the box :( but it will be cleaned up and factory :) and mine :):):)

I just picked up my pre 27 about a month ago. It's been shot, but not too much from the looks of it. The action is very nice. I haven't shot it yet, hopefully in the next week or so.

5" N frames are pretty hard to pass up. I have a 5" M29 classic with the heavy barrel, and it is an awfully nice gun. I later had the chance to add a 5" M27, and grabbed it, too. It's a 50th anniversary commemorative - I don't normally buy commemoratives, but the chance at a 5" M27 couldn't be ignored. Yes, I do shoot it!
