Hey all,

I'll be moving to Ithaca, NY, and I'm looking for information on obtaining a CCW permit from Tompkins County. Unfortunately, packing.org has no information on that particular county. Google also reveals very little. Anyone here know?

Thanks.

Sorry...

The rules vary by county, and in Tompkins, the rule is that nobody is allowed to carry.

Under NYS law, local judges get to arbitrarally amend pistol permits any way they like. Even though a default NYS permit allows for CCW, the local judges long ago decided to cripple every permit that they issue. And no, you can't live in one county and get a permit in another. You have to apply in your county of residence, and you have to live there for a year, as I recall.

If you can take legitimately up residence in nearby Cortland county you'll have much better luck...

Crap! Thanks Mike. I'll see what I can do about Cortland County, but the trouble is that I'll be spending most of my time in Ithaca (at both Cornell and Ithaca College).

It took my wife all of the allowed 6 months in Tompkins; plus three trips to have her fingerprints taken. You will have to wait 6 months before applying.

By the way, if you are coming from out of state you have to leave your handguns behind. You need the pistol permit just to have pistols (OH MY) in your home. Leave them with a gun store and have them shipped to a NY FFL once you get a permit.

You may also apply in the county of your principle employment if that is not the same as where you live.

Tioga to the south has a reputation of being reasonable. It took me about 2 months after I applied to receive mine. Just a tad more south is Pennsylvania.

I just got mine and it took 2 weeks after prints and all my paperwork was in. It is restricted as are all civilian ccw permits in Tompkins County NY. It was a PAIN IN THE ASS from start to finish but it was an interesting process to go through and the people are nice. it was much faster than they said it would be but I had a pretty specific case. Either way, if you have pistols to bring into NY you do need to also make sure you provide a properly fired shell casing so your FFL can have it registered with the State Police. You will have to have this done by a licensed professional if I am not mistaken. You can't just pick up brass after your range time. Good luck.
