"In battery" is when the action (bolt, slide, whatever) is completely closed and properly seated.

So out of battery is when (on the P99) the slide and barrel have not seated completely forward. This is important because that distance is what keeps the action locked long enough for chamber pressures to drop.

This "safety" on your P99 is probably also the disconnector. The disconnector is the device that prevents your gun from being a machinegun. On autopistols, this device disconnects the trigger from the sear by sensing the position of the slide. It only allows them to reconnect once the slide is back to its fully forward position.

All autos have some version of this device, but some are more effective than others. Some guns will fire more "out of battery" than others. I don't know about the P99, but the Glock and Sig have a lot more play than a 1911, for instance.

I hope this over-answered your question.

Thanks it does...irt "The disconnector is the device that prevents your gun from being a machinegun."...sometimes I get 2-3 very quick shoots with one squeeze of the trigger, very close to full auto...I'm also having problems with the gun not going SA after the first shot. I've already emailed Walther about it. I was just wondering if any of this (out of battery, disconnector) is related to the problems I'm having.

Thanks...

Craig

YES!!!

Don't fire that gun again! Document everything it's doing and have Walther USA send a call tag for it. Very dangerous.

Thanks Handy...I wasn't planning on shooting again until I got an answer. I've only got maybe 200 rounds thru it..the first 100 or so were flawless, but then the last two times I noticed the problems...today was the worst. Hopefully Walther will email me back...I waited on hold for 30 or so minutes on the phone and gave up...

Thanks again for the quick answers....

Craig

ps...What's a "call tag"???

UPS comes to your house for a pre-paid pick up direct to Walther.

26point2,

Should have said, Walther should EITHER call tag the gun or agree to credit you any shipping costs. But on something this screwed up the warrantor should pay.
