Why did they not include the magwell as part of the upper?

I realize it would have complicated assembly a teeny bit, but why not just take the magwell out of the equation entirely for doing caliber changes? I noticed they did the same exact thing for the SCAR-L.

Prolly 'cause caliber changes weren't planned into the AR15's original development, I dunno.

HUH??!!
You can't sell accessory magwell adapters if the magwell is part of the upper silly!!:D

Remember the AR was designed back in the 50's.

The SCAR spec was written up with a half century of experience with various platforms behind it.

MGI (http://www.mgimilitary.com/index.htm) did something like what you are suggesting:

The MGI setup is REALLY making me think about getting an AR. They could make a magwell that would take 10/22 mags for the 22 LR uppers.:D

No, the SCAR has the same problems as the AR. I was complaining that they took the same approach.

Um.. is it just me, or is that bolt carrier awful G-36-ish?
