I have two burning questions.
First, do you think I could use this as XD9 ammo?

This 9MM ammunition was made by IMI in Israel in the 70's. It is for Sub-Machine gun use only. It is +P+ and the primers are set for machine gun use. The manufacturer told us that it is non-corrosive, but after testing it we are not so sure, so we are selling it as corrosive ammunition. The ammunition is brass cased boxer primed with a 115 grain lead core bullet.'

Second, what the heck are 'flying ashtrays'? I've heard them referred to but I haven't the foggiest idea what they are.

I'd skip the IMI +P+ ammo unless you've got an Uzi.

"Flying Ashtrays" is the name given to the Spear/CCI 200gr .45 JHP because of its enormous hollowpoint opening -- you could snuff out a cigarette in the cavity.

When a commercial vendor states "It is for Sub-Machine gun use only" it probably means the primers are a bit harder to avoid slamfires,and there's a possibility the ammo is a bit hotter than your civilian weapon is designed for.

The problem as I see it with ammo type is - knowing just how hot it is!!

Way back I had some Hirtenberger 9mm in non pretty packaging - so probably was mil supply. It was HOT - and obviously so. I had no means to check it out for pressure but chances were it was over the limit compared with modern +P - which is not so much up on older so-called std pressure. It finally went thru a Stirling carbine.

True too as has been said - primers can be more robust to safeguard against slamfires.

While IIRC the XD and a good many semi's now are rated +P - I'd avoid that stuff.
