You don't.

There were various tries at this but the only success I remember was in the Norinco "Paratrooper" SKS and the magwell was an attached metal well that the stock was inleted to accept.

It could be done but it's not worth the trouble.

First off, You'd have to have a number of U.S. made parts to make that SKS qualify as a domestic production rifle. (A US-made AK mag would count as a part. But US-made mags are expensive...) With all the after-market US parts for the SKS, it's probably possible, but you'd be spending a lot of money.

Then you'd have to figure out how to fabricate a a conversion magwell and locking tab. I'm not sure anyone makes one right now.

With inexpensive Eastern European AK's for around $300-400 that you could just buy outright, it's really not worth the effort. Just buy an AK. And now you've got two rifles.

If you live in a state where the AK is not legal, but the SKS is, converting your SKS to detachable mags isn't legal either.

Maybe you could convert a cheap AK's stock to have a similar feel to an SKS?

There were some kits that allowed this but you would have to be carefull because I think some US states will not allow this.

Norinco made the sks-m and sks-D both using ak mags, as I recall they had some modification to the bolt in order to get it to clear the feed lips properly, I have a buddy who has the mag well off of one, it requires quite a bit of modification to get it to fit correctly, and afterwards (at least in **********) you are pretty screwed if anyone sees it.

one of my other friends in order to keep his SKS-M after the ban passed, converted it back to regular SKS fixed mags, but as a side benifit, you could still use it with AK mags, you just couldn't remove them and you had to pull the stock off to put them in. still, the 75 round ak drums worked great in it and wern't banned as they were not detachable magazines.

the short answer is don't bother with it, its more work than its worth and odds are you'll wind up with a screwed up rifle

A SKS is not an AK. It is it's own wonderful variant of a com block rifle, beautiful in it's own way. Making a SKS into a quasi-AK or semi-Druganov is doing a disservice to all three weapons. :)
