It was listed in the latest Benelli catalog. The only version I'd get would be the one with the conventional stock; then you could legally install the +2 magazine extension for the full 7+1 capacity. With the other versions, that have pistol grips, a non-magazine tube extension goes from the end of the magazine tube to the end cap, and looks silly. I mean, if the tube has to be there one way or another, it may as well be all magazine.

There's also a version with a fake collapsing stock, which I think is just silly.

Besides, from what I've read the Collapsing stock on the M4 is ill-conceived. It only has two positions, all the way open and all the way closed. And the release button that retracts or extends it, according to SWAT magazine, is often accidentally hit when firing.

I believe they're on sale now. Guy over at the FAL Files said he saw a guy at the range with one. Owner said he paid $1400 for it...no thank you....

But, if you really want one, head down to your dealer. Your dealer's distributor might not have any, though, so keep that in mind. It's very new and it might be awhile before most dealers can get their hands on one.

I have seen several for sale. Sort of ho-hum...very busy looking.
Though with it's gas system, it is bound to be more reliable then the M1 Super 90.

The 1014, the limited edition model of the M4 that looks like the ones used in the military except the 'collapsible' stock is fixed in the extended position by a couple of screws and the mag is only 5 rounds, has been out for awhile. I've seen and been quoted anywhere ~$1200-$1400. (Illegal to extend the mag with the pistol grip stock.)

Haven't seen the standard stock with higher capacity mag out yet.

What Nightcrawler said...

I'm not picking one up until Surefire makes a Responder for it. I need a light on my shotty and I don't need wires running all over it if I can avoid it.

The proper question would be, "When will it be WORTHWHILE to buy an M4", the answer being "MAYBE next September"

One of the guys at my range bought one and brought it in, all $1600 of it.. was a POS, something wrong with the gas system or the way he'd cleaned it (or not cleaned it when he bought it, most likely). Basically a really expensive single shot.

I can't see anyone being better off with an M4 than an M1.

They've been available in neutered versions in CA this year.

Did a 2-day training shoot with someone who just bought one, it wasn't that impressive.

Just how many decent 870s would $1200( the lowest price mentioned) buy? And what will this thing do that an 870 in trained cool hands doesn't?

(Muffled chortling heard faintly from the moderator's chair).....

what is different about the CA version? will it lack something like a pistol grip? or accept less rounds?

I think pistol gripped semi shotguns are illegal in CA. No matter. With the pistol grip in place, you can only have a 5-round tube. With a conventional stock, you could get the full 7-round tube.

PG shotguns are not illegal in CA if they hold 5 rounds or less.

How is the recoil on the Benelli M4 Super 90 compared to a pump or the M1?

Can you buy the standard stock model then unscrew it and put on the pistol grip stock later?

Nightcrawler

The recoil of the Benelli M4 will likely be lower, because it's a gas gun (as are most semiautos). Benelli's recoil operated guns don't have the reduced recoil of gas guns.

So, it'll kick softer than either.

Yes, you can interchange the stocks at will. Keep in mind, though, that per federal law, if the pistol grip is installed, you can't have the magazine tube extension in place. A pistol gripped semiauto shotgun is limited to 5+1 capacity only.

The stock of the CA M4 is a fixed AR15 M4, this means that it is plastic and small and doesn't fit too well on the shoulder. Doesn't not absorb shotgun shell whatsoever and hurts like a sonof agun.
The tube I saw was a 3+1 or a 4+1, which is pretty wimpy for the price.

My beretta 1201fp has the same reciever except for the rails on top. My Beretta grouped better.

Then again, the M4 owner was pretty skinny/light and never fired a SG before, so he might bet better. But he went to birdshot after around 50 shells.

THe one at Second amendment sports, here in bakersfield had a fake telescoping stock with a cushy recoil pad and everything.

it felt fine.

I just think fake collapsing stocks in any iteration are silly, but that's me.

In any case, I have to agree with Dave McC on one thing; $1200+ is AWFULLY steep for a shotgun, even for a Benelli. That's DSA FAL territory right there.

For a lot less, I could get me a Mossy 590A1 with Ghost Rings. Or a Remington 870 Police with ghost rings. Or a Remington 11-87 Police with ghost rings. Or an HK FABARM pump with ghost rings and mag tube extension.

Or, the FABARM AND a Saiga 12 Gauge with 19" defense barrel :D

Don't let my penny-pinching sway you, though. If you really want an M4, by all means, go get one. If nothing else, you'll likely be the first on your block to have one.

$1200+ is too high of a price. I will wait until the price drops a little.

I don't think the price will drop for the 1014 as it is more of a collector's item than anything else, much like an HK Mark 23. Hopefully, the standard grade will be much more affordable.

what's the difference between the m1014 and the standard edition? when will we see the standard edition?

Nightcrawler
April 28, 2003, 11:25 PM
The M1014, as pertaining to Benelli's civilian sales, is a limited edition run with the pinned collapsing stock and an American flag embossed on the side of the receiver.

What will the regular version be called? Will it be called M4 Super 90? When will the standard edition come out?

$1400!!! For a volume production shotgun?

I'll pay $1400 for a volume production shotgun if it can safely handle, on a regular basis, loads generating 40,000 PSI of pressure. I'd call it the 729 Nitro Express. :D

I response to the "why spend $1200 when you can spend $250 on brand X"...

Why spend $75000 on a Hummer when you can buy a Jeep for $25000? (before you all start, I've seen Jeeps go where Hummers couldn't. Although most Hummer owners I see are too scared they'll scratch it ) Why not just get rid off all guns except for 1 of each type. 1 shotgun model, 1 handgun model, 1 rifle model...

My regular gun shop in NE OH, B&T Shooting Supplies / Middleburg Hts., had 4. They held the last one for me (a regular customer) to check out before selling and told me $1200. Didn't care for the fixed 'collapsible' and limited mag so I passed. It is long gone. This was late 2002.
