A fellow was killed in Maryland just outside DC last night. I am watching it on the news right now.

He did "exactly what the police tell you to do and handed over his money."

Problem is, they killed him anyway.

Damn unfortunate. And proof positive of why we're armed.

Just a thought ...

The antis got what they wanted ... a dead victim and two bad guys to hunt down and capture - and then prosecute in a media event for all to see how tough they are on crime.

I have heard to keep some cash in a money clip with some heft to it. Toss the clip and run like hell the other way. He'll go for the cash.

I do however know of a woman who was asked to come with a guy and get in the car. Without missing a beat, she said she couldn't do that because she had an appointment. The guy was dumbfounded, she kept walking, and he let her go.

I remember seeing a purse left on the front seat of a car in plain view in a deserted parking garage once. No camera trained on the area. This was the Mayo Clinic, so probably a doc. Car was a Ferrari Berlinetta.

Of course he got shot.

The victim can't ID you, and rat you out for armed robbery, if you commit
murder.

In related news.

Different guy got hacked with a machete. In a nice area of Crofton Maryland (most of the house's are over 500k+).

This whole area is becoming more violent. I use to live over in that area.

In the last 2 year's of living up here. I've been the victim of 3 attempted mugging's, and 2 attempted car jackings.

I don't walk around with my head up my ass either, and saw all but one of them long before it developed. Fought back, and won.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/annearundel/bal-md.ar.machete09may09,0,958046.story?coll=bal-local-arundel

A 60-year-old man was slashed, possibly with a machete, and robbed yesterday outside a Wachovia bank in Crofton, Anne Arundel County police said.

The man was walking from his vehicle to the bank in the Crofton Centre plaza on Route 3 about 9:30 a.m. when two men approached him, cut him on the legs and lower back and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from him.

Police did not identify the victim, who was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

According to police, witnesses saw the attackers flee in a van. Police later found a white van, which might have been stolen, outside the former Crofton library in the plaza.

Congratulations, he is now eligible for a ccw! :fire:

crofrog, can i find that in writing somewhere(ie MSP or some state legislative website or soemthing)?

This kind of crap just burns me up.

The other night on my way home from work(2:30am) I realized how low on gas I was. I had to get up early in the am and get to school. I stopped at the Glenmont amoco (well-lit, major intersection, across the street from police station...). Should be a safe place for gas, no?
While im pumping, a guy, about my age, dressed in the standard-issue thug-apparel comes running up to me, asks for change so he can buy a cigarette. Of course I refuse, and after several atttempts the guy offers me weed or coke in exchange for change  Upon further refusal on my part and informing it was time for him to seek life elsewhere, he goes running up to a couple cars in the intersection waiting for the light to turn, both of which speed off through the light as he approaches.
I finish pumping gas and head for home, after a quick call to the police, protect and serve, right?
In reflection, had I been a naive or a person of less physical stature, I might not be sitting here telling this story.
I sure wish I was carrying, I figure that situation could have turned ugly, fast.

Errr... I had it wrong

(i) except as provided in item (ii) of this paragraph, the person is subject to imprisonment for not less than 30 days and not exceeding 3 years or a fine of not less than $250 and not exceeding $2,500 or both; or

I've been reading so many laws lately that they've all mushed together in my head.

And thanks to MD's "No less than X years" sentancing rules, anyone caught for illegal CCW is prohibited from ever owning guns again due to federal law. :banghead:

Yep it's awesome isn't it.

Er, I mean "No MORE than X years", since the federal law is based off the worst possible punishment, not the actual one recieved. Almost everything in MD is punishable by "not more than 3 years in prison."

Drive, you're in college, and this is near school? It's kind of strange you found that unusual. That stuff happens every weekend. Heck, I do it too. Lots of kids smoke pot and dress like that, although the crack would've made me nervous. There's crowds of drunken, shouting people clogging up the streets until 3 or 4 AM every friday and saturday night... Me and my friends have had to wait an hour to get an open table at Denny's at 4am on big party nights, like mardi gras.

There was a guy I would run into frequently along Cherry Hill Rd./Randolph Rd. Usually it was in College Park, but sometimes west. His panhandling style was to walk directly up to people in parking lots asking for money or food. He was never physically threatening, but he also wasn't persistent. He'd just keep going if you said no. He was the Energizer Bunny of bums.

There's a guy I used to see along New Hampshire or Georgia Ave. that I told my wife to watch for, he wasn't right at all. Looked like Jim Cavizel(sp.).

I'm so glad to be out of MD.

You can't be too careful. It's not like it was 30 years ago when most folks knew what was right. A lot of folks just haven't had any raising.

THINK! You didn't have a gun, but you had the fuel hose! Pull it out of your car and hold on to it. If he makes a move, drench him in gas. Even without a lighter, he's in for a world of hurt with gas in his eyes.

EXACTLY! I work in the public, doing a job that won't allow me to carry weapons. so the majority of us carry make-shift weapons out of our regular uniform supplies. like for instance, we're issued a very large key, and have to have this key on us at all times. add a chain to the key and it becomes somewhat of a "morning star". it's not a weapon, until I use it as one.

Kobun: Perfect reply for S&T.

We had a similar event happen in Minneapolis about a month ago, maybe two.
The group finished eating dinner at an Uptown restaurant just before 10 p.m. Saturday night and started walking to their car on Girard Avenue, near 31st Street.

Minneapolis Police say two young males approached the group and demanded the mother's purse. She gave it to them, but one of the suspects shot Zebuhr anyway. Witnesses say he was shot in the head.

I'm actually in MD on business. The incident above took place very close to where I'm staying/working. This isn't the first violent crime which has taken place in that neighborhood since I've been here, just the first to result in a death. Too bad MD doesn't have a reciprocity agreement with my home state. I'd feel a lot better if I could carry here. Thankfully I'll be leaving very soon. If I have my way, I won't be returning to MD anytime soon.

i didnt include that i had my 3 cell maglite right inside the car. ive gotten in the habit of keeping the window open and my maglite within reach.

yes, staying in shape is a good idea. with the exception of finals, i find myself in the gym two-three times a week. at 6-2, 200, im in decent shape. i also do ok in physical situations as security at the bar i work at(reason for me being out so late). had something occurred, im sure i would have been fine, doesnt mean i like to be in that sort of situation.

Reading about this kind of male bovine pucky really makes me angry. If the stupid commies would allow their constituents to CCW, this sort of thing wouldn't happen. To those of you living in Maryland who are my 2nd Amendment supporting brethren, I'll put in a good word with Crom for you.

maryland; isnt that where the female cop arrested the two tourists for trespass? Guess that's why they are not out defending Citizens and stopping crime. They are too busy commiting 'random acts of incompetence'

It just keeps getting more ignorant and violent everyday. However, their "answer" to the issue is always bassackwards.

I just don't get this place at all.

We sound pretty similar.

For me:
Big -- check
Works security at a bar -- check
Keeps his window down and a weapon in reach -- check

Only mine is a 7 inch ka-bar USMC fighting knife. :D

Several months ago this happened here in Minnesota. The guy did everything the police tell you to do, and he was shot in the head. I think if you are confronted like this you must assume the worst is going to happen and act accordingly.
