How'd i do???

Well, yesterday i went on a hunting trip. The game on this so-called hunting trip was a new rifle. i didn't have much in mind when i went out. but i knew what i wanted. I wanted a nice long range plinker of sorts. between .243 and .300 Win.Mag......with that said on with the hunt.

the hunt started at Rajo guns in Evansville, IN. I went in with a smile on my face and a wad in my pocket. Looked around a bit and found a few nice SKS' and one AK-47 that looked as if it hadn't been touched. but still nothing that struck my fancy. so i walked out still with a smile on my face, but a little less money in my pocket.....(just had to have this double rifle case). so across town i went. To Strictly Shooting, also in Evansville,IN. They had a decent selection and a nice Ruger M77 mkII in 30-06. but the stock looked like it was beaten with a hammer. So i passed on that rifle, and on down the case i went. but i still didn't find anything that i liked.

So now the hunt was getting a little tougher. well i had one more source that i knew of. but this one was a bit further. Whittaker Guns in Owensboro, KY. not really IN Owensboro but about 20min east of the town. So in i went. this place from the outside looked like a pole barn with banners all over the front of it. but on the inside it was AMAZING!!!!:what: :what: i couldn't believe my eyes. on the first island of display layed 3 count em' 3 .50 BMG rifles:evil: and past those was about 2500-4000 long rifles and handguns.........    this was the biggest candy store i've ever been in. well i walked around for what it seemed hours on end and nothing really popped out at me. until i walked down the row of used rifles..............and there it was. it looked like a reverse OREO cookie. there was a birch stocked rifle on each side of it. IT was a Winchester Model 70 in .300 Win. Mag. with a black composite stock. It was what i was looking for. Wonderfully equipped with a Tasco 20x50 scope and a Harris bipod. I thought in my mind..Grab and run......but i would probably be shot:cuss: so i walked it up to the counter and asked how much......$400 then again i thought, Buy it and run.....little bit better of an idea. so i did as i thought and bought the rifle. i walked out pleased by baggin the game that i had sought after all day. Now i just have to find time to go out and shoot it and find out how well it will do. do u think i did?
anything i should know before shooting this rifle because i've never fired this powerfull of a rifle before?
any imput would be apprecated

I have a model 70 just like yours (with a different scope). Have had it for a few years. Mine is a really fine rifle indeed. The caliber is very useful and versatile-capable of anything from vermin to the biggest and baddest on the continent!

Recoil is not nearly as bad as some had told me-it is a non-issue. Mine does start to spread 'em when shot till it gets hot, but it will put 3 that it lkes into under 1" at 100 yds easily! I shoot Nosler BT's in mine (handloaded) because it REALLY likes them! It WILL put deer in the pot! (Mine has on several occasions.)

You made a super choice. You got a really good gun at a good price and now you are set up! Shoot the heck out of it and enjoy!

Sounds as if you got a pretty good deal. Good rifle, good caliber. My only recommendation is to change the scope. I don't like or trust Tasco on any thing larger than a 22 LR. That is just my opinion and you may be happy with it. Enjoy your new rifle.

i'm not too sure about changing the scope at the moment. bc all this rifle is going to be used for is long range target. and besides there was a target that the previous owner left with it that had a 5shot group at.6in at 100yds with Federal 180grn. i'm gonna shoot the hell outta it this weekend and try to change my mind.
