I have two questions for you, please.

1) I've observed that magnum primers improve speed and SD results with some powders, usually double-based. Do you know if AA5 likes magnum primers better than standard ones?

2) Would you be so kind to share your experience with AA5? I'd like to find a mild, accurate target load with 200LSWC bulltes, and a near max, but safe, one with 200 LSWC, 230 LRN and 230 plated RN bullets.
I've run the search function, but I'd like to have some more suggestions from you members.
TIA, and best regards from Italy.

I use AA5 quite a bit. It's very easy to meter and clean. 200 gr LSWC's in my Springer Loaded.

I use Winchester primers. Hotter than standard but on the lower end of magnum primers. Ball powder needs all the help it can get to light off. Actually for pistol, I used WW for everything. Keeps it simple.

Thanks, Redneck2. I like WLP primers too, they are my "standard" primers. Sometimes I have access to the pressure gun of an Italian ammo manufacturer, so I've run some speed/pressure tests and I've found that WLP are hotter than CCI 300, but they are not real magnum primers as CCI 350. With some powders, it's really better to use CCI 350.
I need answers to my questions to find a good place to start, as I can't abuse of the kindness of the ammo manufacturer.

Would you share with me your loads?
Other members, please?
Thank to all,
Maxm

for practice for my carry .45s, with a 185 gr plated bullet and 9.7 gr AA#5. Works fine. I use CCI standard primers. No proble

I have also used the same charge for 200 gr JHP with no problem.

I've worked up some nice loads in .45ACP with AA#5 and 185 to 200gr bullets.
My favorite target load for my Springer Mil-Spec is with 200gr Ranier plated SWCs over 9.6gr of AA#5, with CCI Large Pistol Primers (Wins were unavailable).
This load gives me sub 1 inch groups all day long at 15yds with a velocity of 900fps.

This load would probably be fine with lead bullets if you dropped it .2 or .3gr and checked for any possible pressure signs.

A curious thing I've observed about #AA5, is the different evalutation about its burning rate. It's difficult to find two burning rate tables putting #AA5 in the same place! Perhaps, this could be due to the fact that in the years this powder was produced by different makers.
I'm rigth in supposing that the actual #AA5 has a burning rate similar to Unique and VV N340, or it is more progressive?
Thanks, Maxm

Above 460 Rowland pressures in 45acp brass with AA#5, I use large rifle primers.

At 100 meters, 230 gr FMJ Montana Gold gives me the best accuracy.
