Just had an eye opening experience with my new Revolver

Just went out today with my new 4" GP-100 .357 and had spent about $650 dollars getting every type of ammunition to break this thing in , in every grain in .38 special and .357 from cheap to premium and every type of bullet from hollow point to wadcutter.

After the first 500 rounds I realized Ive wasted in excess of 5-6,000 dollars on auto pistols and accesories Ive owned over 20 different types of auto pistols. Im a descent shot no marksman I can get pretty close to 2" groups on moving and stationary targets, I shoot every week sometimes every other week and train in several different drills on stationary and moving targets.

The first time Ive fired this pistol (ive fired a 22lr revolver before so I was used to the sites) every 6 shots were overlapping with an occasional stray grouping but still in the black ,double tapping or with sustained fire Im not bragging or tellin a fish story just suprised how much better I am with revolvers than autos even with the effort I put into practicing with them.

Which after this got me thinking along the terms of a self defense situation since ill be getting my chl soon that maintaining accuracy is one of the important factors as well as functionability so I was probably going to use my revolver as my CCW. Im able to reload with safari speed loaders 10seconds faster than changing a magazine and slingshoting an auto back into battery which doesnt seem like much but is pretty important when time counts.

Recently on TFL there was a topic that asked wether or not revolvers were obsolete or not and It shows that peoples perception of an auto's superiority has been inflated beyond belief with all of these accesories and different sites available and large magazine capacity. When I can pick up a revolver from a quality manufacturerer with no site or internal modification in a 1911's case certain magazines and have it out preform any auto that I have owned or shot. It was pretty dumbfounding putting around 4,000-6,000 completely different types and makes of rounds with little to no cooling period and experiencing no malfunctions or problems other than the skin wearing off of the sides and bottom of my trigger finger.

I look back now and it makes me think of all the garbage people have said throughout other forums in the past and what the guy at the gunshop told me about recoil on a .357 was to much and could break your wrist if it wasnt locked correctly while firing. Yet the recoil of even the full powered +p and buffalo bore gave me less then my 1911 with regular 230 grain rounds in it. It felt easier to me to keep on target then even my sig226 in 9mm.

I Just wanted to share my first real experience with my revolver, Now Im undecided wether I want to sell most or all of my autos and buy revolvers of different makes and calibers instead.

Does anyone else feel that a revolver is superior to an auto with its only weakness being its capacity, which now with S&W's 7-8 round cylinders(cant rember what number it is) pretty much even up the odds if your a 1911 fan.

I shoot mostly revolvers and have a GP-100 (S&W N frames being my favorites). I can shoot more accurately with revolvers than most semi-autos, and I just like them overall.

That said, I also own a 1911. I shoot it as well as I do my revolvers and I really like the single-action trigger and the ergonomics. So for me, it's pretty much wheel guns and 1911s.

My personal oppinion (based on little practical experience and alot of reading) is that the revolver vs semi debate will never die. Each has its merits and depending on the situation that the user/carrier is likely to encounter will dicate the pros or cons of each that will affect the decision more. As a private citizen unlikely to ever fire in any situation I choose a revolver for the simplicty. I would choose an auto for police or military work. My chances of firiing woud be much greater and in the event that I had a failure the chances of having on hand back up are much higher.

Don't know about superior but I think revolvers are just as good for the average person. You have a fine revolver than can handle most any sane load. Some people have problems with the recoil, blast and flash of a .357 especially in the smaller guns but the GP100 is beefy enough to handle them well and the .357 is still one of the best fight stoppers around. Don't believe all you hear in gun shops, ranges or even here about the revolver being obsolete.:p

I have many guns, but I shoot my Springfield TRP 1911 and my Ruger GP 100 most often, in fact, almost exclusively now. I like how the 1911 feels in my hand better, but I am a much better shot with the wheelgun. I've shot a bunch of other semi autos, and don't like them, but I haven't ever shot a revolver I don't like.
