I was just wondering this guys if he obtains lawful residence here can he buy a handgun and get a ccw permit in Florida? Thanks

I don't know - it depends on the State's own laws. Here in Louisiana, a permanent resident (i.e. green card holder) can legally buy a handgun (Federal law), and legally get a CCW permit (State law - extends CCW access to permanent residents). In other states, a permanent resident can own a handgun (Federal law) but not get a State CCW permit because only citizens are allowed them. Check the Florida statutes... Note that a temporary resident (i.e. here on a work or student visa, but not a permanent resident) can legally buy long guns for hunting, etc., depending on the nature of his/her residence, but can't buy handguns, AFAIK.

Eligibility Requirements

*You must be a citizen of the United States OR you must be deemed a lawful permanent resident alien by the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service (U.S. INS).

*If you are not a citizen of the United States, you must submit documentation issued by the U.S. INS proving you are a permanent legal resident alien who has resided in your state of residence for at least 90 consecutive days prior to the date the application is submitted. Evidence of proof includes, but is not limited to:

-Utility bills; telephone, power, or cable
-Pay stubs or other documentation from your employer
-Credit card statement


*You must be 21 years of age or older.
*You must be able to demonstrate competency with a firearm.
