Many States require your social security account number (SSAN) to buy a license. Some have seen a drop in license sales. This may be because the reason is stupid. It is suppost to catch dead beat parents. But if a debtor thinks "Hhmm, should I pay for a license and tell my child's custodian where I am and face paying the multi thousand I owe, or just poach and face a small fine if cought?" The ratio of fine to debt may 100:1

Other people like myself loath giving my SSAN to some store clerk and will not give it out except at the Courthouse or secure online purchases. Do you think it is OK for the States to require yous social security number to pay them for a license?

Catching 100 dead-beat parents is more important than worries about exposing millions to Identity Theft.

You gotta keep your priorities straight, son. You gotta get over the idea that government is out to protect your interests.

I don't much care for it. But if you're buying a hunting license you're already acknowledging that the government has the right to distribut hunting privileges as they see fit and you're also tacitly admitting that they also have the right to control and monitor hunting and hunters. I don't see that drawing the line at giving them my SSN makes any sense in that light.

On the other hand, I don't buy my license at Wal-Mart anymore as a result of this rule. I go to the local TPWD headquarters to buy my license. It's certainly a lot less convenient.

The more you give your SSN out the more at risk you become to someone stealing you idenity. I just changed insurance companies and they asked for my SSN, I asked why and my insurance guy said that people with better credit get better rates...What the heck is that!!!:fire: WHY??:cuss:
I hate giving my SSN out. When Buying a new firearm the state of Wisconsin asks for it but so far it is not required. Use my D/L number or state ID number but I hold my SSN tight. I have heard too many stories of ID theft. Your SSN I believe is NOT a form of ID therfore, I only use it when applying for credit or Tax purposes. What more do you need for it???

My OK lifetime license is NOT a form of ID but it does have my SSN on it. I guess I'm kinda lucky that I don't have to worry about deer tags-turkey tags- ID theft...........

Maybe the debtor should skip the license (and the rest of the hunting expenses) and pay down part of the debt. Just a thought. Heck, that would leave more time for a part-time job, too.

I for one am fed up with the federal and the state governments aiding and abetting Identity Theft. Texas started using the SSN on Driver's Licenses. My son's USAF serial number was his SSN, which the AF wanted on the envelope of any mail sent to him or by him.

I don't have a clue about how many deadbeat dads are hunters, out of all deadbeat dads. I do know than in 2004 or thereabouts, we had some 60,000 cases of Identity Theft in the U.S.

I tried talking to my State Rep about it. Got the usual nods of understanding. End of story...

Prohibited here in AK. The requirement and reasons for a SSN on a license IMHO is a smokescreen for something else more sinister.

If they say it's to find deadbeat parents, it's a lie. The database of employed persons already has the info. If you have a job or business, you're already in it.

Of course you are right. But by definition a dead beat dad is a lazy worthless bum who won't suppost his kids.

In reality a man may have a high paying job upon dirvorce, and then get "downsized" into something with half the wages. Before he can get back into Court to apeal his child support, he may owe thousands.
