I recently renewed my C&R and picked up on auction a S&W 38 spl that was listed as a Model 10 circa 1946 with a serial number of S866xxx. The yoke is marked 38453 and the barrel is marked 38 S&W Speclal Ctg. I bought it as a shooter (which it definetly is :) ) and not as a collector piece. Just would like to know actual model number so if I ever decide to sell it I'll have the right information.

You have a very early post-war (1945-1948) ".38 Military & Police", better known as the model 10 after 1957. It's a shame the front sight has been altered.
Here's a pic of my "53" vintage...These are wonderful guns!

Sorry , they didn't use a model number as such until around 1957 . You can call it an M&P Military & Police or 38 Hand Ejector Military & Police Model 1905 5th Change I think .

Sorry Frenchy , took me too long to type it out .

Don'cha just hate it when that happens, guy! :D

One of the more noticeable differences between JBP's gun and mine, is the hammer. His has the "long throw" style that didn't change until serial number S990184 when the newer "short throw" was adopted.
There was no "5th. change" per say.

Frency & Guy: Thanks for the info and the pic of the the way that the front sight is supposed to look. The seller told me that it had been altered but it has been sanded down and probably touched up a bit because it is smooth and blue. What purpose there was in doing it beats me but I guess it gave whomever did it a better sight picture.

He obviously was trying for a Patridge style front sight. To bad...The half moon blade gives a good sight picture, IMO. A very nice piece, none the less.

All I'm seeing is a red X where the picture should be...

Hum...

Now I see what everyone was talking about regarding the front sight.

Interesting treatment.
