Does anybody have any data for launching lead bullets (c. 405 gr) with the 458 Win Mag? I would like to get decent iron sight accuracy at 50 - 100 yards for some inexpensive fun.
Thanks,
George

Just to give you some ideas the 458 Win Mag is very close in capacity to the old 45-90, and black powder works good through it. You may also have some luck with powders like 3031 that can be loaded down quite a bit. Take a look at how low the charges are for the 45-70. There are several other powders out there that would probably work better for down loading though.

BigG, 18 gr. of Unique should work with your 405 gr. lead bullet.
For a 25 yd. plinking round ball load, you can use 8 gr. of Unique or 6 gr. of Bullseye with a .460" ball.

Lyman lists reduced loads for cast bullets. Try their data.
The first .458 I shot was being handloaded at the range, using dippers, Blue Dot reduced loads, and home cast bullets.

IIRC, Ken Waters' Pet Loads has some .45-70 strength loads for the .458.
