Howdy folks, I don't know much, anything really, about double barrels. But I am wanting one in 12ga. that will shoot slugs/sabots. Does not have to be fancy because it will be used and used in rough country. I would like to keep the cost near $500.00.
I looked in the Gun Digest gun book and did not find any help.
I have a good pump 12, some good rifles, and a good pistol. The side by side will be for bear. Sounds nutty to some but I don't really care about that.
So who makes guns like what I'm looking for??

One of the Russian ones would be perfect
Cheap, solid, nothing fancy (no worries about throwing it in the back of a truck) and pretty stout.
Baikal, I also think they are sold under the Remington name now.
I'm sure others will pipe in.

Nobody.
Bernardelli makes a slug model double barrel but it would cost way over $500 even if they were being imported to USA, which I don't think they are.
Getting both barrels of a double to shoot slugs together, like regulating the barrels of a double express rifle is an expensive proposition. And not much demand.
I guess you could put sights on a cheap double and try it out. Probably you would have to adjust the sights for one barrel to shoot a slug and load the other with buckshot.

Well Phooey! The Bounty Hunter is not on this site anymore!

These were double guns, with screw in chokes. One barrel was 12 bore, the other 45-70. All the ones I shot, were POA/POI.
The folks that have these, used them in rough and tumble outdoor settings to Serious guns in a business setting...warehouse office overlooking the warehouse on one side of office, and the public entrance the other way.
Triggers needed smoothing, as did the action getting opened...darn thing worked !
I cannot find a link - sorry, but most folks kept one bbl a 12 bore and the other bore a 45-70. Taken hogs to deer with them...and tested on windshields and the rest of junk cars too.
HTH.

zed, there's nothing strange about what you want.
The Brits have always favored the large-caliber double rifle for hunting or defending against dangerous animals, especially in Africa. Those who can afford it, still do -- they're generally very, very expensive. They point and acquire a target quickly and reliably, and they're good for shooting at moving targets, just like a SxS shotgun.
What you're really asking for is something that will work like a double rifle, but won't cost $10,000, and will shoot commonly-available slugs instead of expensive and rare Rigby or H&H rounds.
There are a couple of double rifles that aren't too expensive. One is the .45-70 Spartan SPR22, imported by Remington. It's a Russian Baikal, formerly imported by EAA as mentioned by sm (aside to sm: look at Remington's web site for most of the EAA imports). From all reports, Remington's involvement has led to significant improvements in quality, well worth the somewhat higher prices than EAA charged.

Their SxS shotguns are remarkably inexpensive. They might work, but their beads will limit you to closer ranges than rifle sights. I think Carlson makes aftermarket chokes for them. The factory chokes may not like slugs, but the barrels ought to be fine. Ask Remington! They have good customer service. Don't blow yourself up based on my advice. Call them.

Another double rifle, if you can find it, is the Pedersoli. Muzzleloaders are easy to find, but the break-action versio takes some digging.

"Wanting a double barrel/side by side 12ga. slug gun "
welcome to the club,I've been looking for a long time.I doubt you'll find one in that price range,I've found a few Itialian brands for more than a thou.If you have access to the larger gun shows you might keep you eyes open for a Uggie, they make a buck&boar type that somtimes finds it's way to our shores for less than a thou. One more thing I doubt you"ll find anything for sabots all the buck&boar types are for shooting foster type slugs through regulated barrels and some type of rear leaf sights.

Are you looking to bear hunt or for defense??? If it's hunting, you may well have 50 yard+ shots. If it's defense, maybe 10 yards I suspect. At 10 yards, foster style slugs in any double should work.

go to a pawn shop or gun shop and pick up a used double barrel. The only thing you need to watch out for is a tight lockup of the gun when closed. Either do it yourself or take it to a gunsmith and bob the barrels to 20 inches. Instant double slug gun. They are not long range guns anyway and the recoil prevents a real fast second shot. You can always pull both barrels at the same time............If you need to shoot much past 40 yards, buy a rifle.....chris3

Thanks one and all! I like what I've read about the SPR22, in 45/70, and will be going with that double. A good friend that is a professional guide has one of the Spartan double barrel 12 gauges and loves it. And thought I would be better of hunting bear with it. Though I believe he thinks I ought to have the 12 gauge also. Hmmm. Maybe someday I will.
Again thank you all for your help.
I meant my friend thinks I should use the 45/70 for bear hunting.

The only Pedersoli I saw for auction went for over 2K.

They are wonderful (I shot a 20 rounds through one) but not cheap. I believe they sell for around 3K+ IF you can find one. I have only seen that one for sale used.

Shameless self promotion.
I can't testify to the POA/POI as I've never shot it. Comes with Mod and IC tubes. I can sub another IC tube if you're interested.

Jedcatvig, the Stoeger double is made in Brazil for the Benelli/Franchi Group.
The Stoeger 2000 autos are made in Turkey. I don't have a Stoeger double but I have a couple of the autos and they are reliable. I have handled and fondled some of the Brazilian made doubles and salivated over them but never could fall in love with them. No doubt they are good, economical guns but I haven't decided to bring one home with me yet. I've wanted to but changed my mind before I parted with the dinero. Maybe next time!
