There is one at a local shop that caught my eye yesterday.
I think it is a Uberti, but I am not sure.
It is 45-70 with a straight stock, ladder rear sight on the barrel, and double-set triggers.
I was suprised at how well it balanced, and I immediately had fantasies of holding off claim jumpers and shooting at outlaws with it.
Is $675 a fair price for a new one?
Does anyone know where I could get one cheaper?
I know that there was a thread about this a little while back, but the forum seemed a little slow tonight.

the following is a MY input on this based on the information i have been given by more owners of Sharps repros than i can count.

as far as i know Uberti doesn't MAKE a Sharps Repro. (if they do it's not listed on their site)

WARNING some of the names are about to get confusing, but it is important NOT to get them mixed up!!

it is important to know the maker of the gun, some are garbage (most of the ones under $800), some approach the level of the Shiloh/C.Sharps guns, at a reduced price.

unless it's a economy model of a Cavalry carbine (doubtful since it has double-sets) at that price i suspect that the gun was made by one of the LOW end italian companies, such as Pedretti, pietta(don't know if they do a sharps) Armi San Marcos, Or any number of lesser names. some of these are SAFE to shoot but poorly fit, or finished, and/or have really dismal accuracy. others, Pedretti and some of the "unknowns" (the one's that few recognize) are known to have high "failure rates" and are considered, by most i've talked to, to be unsafe to shoot, or in more direct terms (adn yes i've heard this used numerous times to describe them) as a "hand-grenade on a rifle stock".

if you REALLY want a decent 1874 Sharps without having to pay for a Shiloh or C.Sharps. my advice is to go with either Pedersoli or Armi-Sport (see told you the names were similar, but the quality and safety are vastly different) Either of these brands is a good place to start.

Pedersoli is the Maker of the sharps Repros sold by Navy Arms, and most other quality importers of "vintage arms, reproductions"

Taylor's and Co. (http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/armisport.html) Sells the Armi-sport line of sharps as their ONLY line of Sharps. Btw ine of my local dealers beleives the Taylor's imported sharps, to be just slightly better than the Pedersoli, and since he can get it for less and pass the savings on to customers he prefers to order the Taylor's

Cimarron Firearms sells BOTH the Pedersoli and the Armi-sport Sharps reproes. the way they are listed on the Cimarron website (http://www.cimarron-firearms.com/) seems to show that they consider the only difference between the two is the price THEY have to pay, which makes the Armi-Sport less expensive to YOU.

anyway look around, go back and look closely at the gun in question and look for MAKER'S marks (impoter name doesn't always mean the same maker, some of the importers, like EMF, sell both Pedersoli and Pedretti or Pietta, at different price points)

and to make it simple, if the maker is NOT Pedersoli or Armi-SPORT pass on it. b/c the quality and many times safety of the OTHER makers is a hit or miss proposition. and i'm sorry i am not willing to bet my life/face to save several thousand dollars much less a few hundred or less!!!

my last bit of advice is, if you are interested in a sharps with the possibility of using it in a BPCR (Black Powder Cartrige rifle) match or other simlar situation. go over to Graybeard outdoors (http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/index.php) and look in the BPCR forum, there WAS another website i was going to suggest, Blackpowdershooters.com , but they seem to be having trouble at the moment.

i'm sure others will chime in on this as well. good luck

Edited to add..... almost forgot if you see the initals etc IAB , ANYWHERE on a sharps reproduction, hand it back to the salesman before it comes apart in your hand! (i'm only slightly exagerating)

Thanks for that info.
It will be passed to a fellow shooter who might find it very useful.
We were just talking about this style of firearm.
Good timing. :)

At $650 it is either a great deal or an EMF Sharps. EMFs are not well built like the Pedersolis, Armis, C. Sharps, or Shilos.

Cool. I'll go back and look it over really well.
I can't afford it yet, maybe not for a long time, but I will check it out again just the same.
Thanks.
