View Full Version : Please help me spend my money

OK, it is time for me to buy another gun.

I've gone a while (for me) without and the toy I bought a month ago (a cheap Hi Point Carbine) and the S&W M19 I bought a few weeks ago and pick up this week aren't going to cut it. I haven't bought until those two since last summer so I have several that I really want and a couple unserved holes to fill.

I have sold a gun recently and my tax return came (and I'm considering selling another that doesn't really seem to fit what I want) and if need be I can save a few more paychecks and go about a month without going too nuts (just buying the M19 helps). I wouldn't mind holding on to a few extra bucks (beyond what I am saving anyway) due to uncertain income/expenses at the end of the summer since I hope to get into an out of state graduate school in which case I'll be moving (and if to a CCW state I'll also need gun leather in addition to normal moving expenses and temporary delay in getting paid between jobs). Anyway, both situations lead to a rather broad range (I can now go from a $200 used revolver to $500 or 600 on guns, either one new or two used guns, or I can wait a month and safely go to about $700-800).

Having gone a while, I am inclined to go w/ two of the cheaper options if I spend the entire potential gun budget than one more expensive option but we'll see.

It looks more likely that I might be in a carry state for grad school so a good carry gun is a must:
-I'd like another 3" K-frame to have customized so I don't have to cut on my 65LS (my first .357 so I don't want this one cut)
-I really have had my eye on the S&W 3913 for a LONG time and now I'm also thinking the 908 would be nice.
-I love CZs though oddly the P01 doesn't do it for me. In the name of my love of CZs should I overlook that?
-I actually like the CZ100
-I'd like a Springfield XD
-another J-frame or equivelent would be nice since I got rid of the 605 some time ago (no more .357mag small snubs for me)

There are some range options as well
-I've wanted a Vaquero or SAA clone for a couple years now
-I still don't have a .44mag. Don't like the recoil much, but I'm about to start reloading so I can find a load that works for me I suppose.
-I love 1911s. I'd love a SA, I could get the Mil-spec on a budget and still get one of my other less expensive alternatives or I could get the Loaded and take my entire budget (if I save for a few weeks)
-I've wanted a BHP for a while now. Should I start looking at the used gun racks (or get a clone) finally.
-I love CZs, how about the 97, or maybe another 75 variation (I love my 75B)

Wildcard:
-I'd love a pistol caliber lever rifle. I love my Win 94 more than any other gun I own but I don't get to the rifle range much. This would let me get more trigger time on this kind of gun.
-I don't yet have a centerfire bolt rifle (maybe a Howa finally)
-A M1 Carbine would be nice- an historic rifle and it could be used on pistol ranges
-a military style rifle (AR15, AR180, CETME, FAL, etc) would be nice, but with few rifle range trips I'm not sure it is worth the cost
-I still need a .22lr pistol (maybe get a snub for cheap shooting and easy snub training as well?)
-get nothing and save it all ("the guns will be there when you get to graduate school, hold on to the money if you need it and if not buy the guns then- they are cheaper in most other parts of the country anyway")
-"Buy gun leather for what you have. If you are going to go to grad school in a CCW state you'll need better carry gear than what you have now."
-I'm only starting reloading- I guess I could use the money for really high quality and/or more reloading gear
-buy ONE of my cheaper options and use the difference for a scaled down version of one of the last three "wildcard" options.

So what do you guys think?

Perhaps a Ruger MkII? Very fun, very accurate, and .22lr is cheap. You can get one for around $300 and save the rest of your money until you find out where grad school is going to take you.

Wait. I just told someone to save money instead of spending it all on guns. I must be getting sick or something. :scrutiny:

When I was still in college the choices were Bologna or Spam... :D

Yeh..yeh.. and I walked 10 miles to school in raging blizzards to huh??:D

Well no, but I did ride a horse 4 miles to school for the 1st 4 years... :)

Have fun in your search!!

Get a Kadet kit for your CZ!! Nothing like shooting the 75 for a little over a penny a round.

Ditto on the Kadet Kit, if not go with a Hi-Power.

Chaim, I know you are one to agonize over several disparate decisions, as well as the ramifications of each; therefore, taking your Life Situation as a point of reference, here's my suggestion(s): Blow the cash!!

I, personally, would go with the SA Loaded and/or better reloading equipment.

Mazel tov!

cONSIDER A PCR for your possible CCW gun. For being a
POLICE gun, they sure are popular due to being compact and
light for CCW.

Since you already shoot a nice Revolver, the DA and decocker
should suit you fine.

If you want to go Cocked and Locked the CZ75 Compact or
the Browning would be good.

Should you want a rock solid .45 for less than $500. The 97B
is a winner.

Sounds like you have a lot of options. Good luck with your
CZ pourchase:scrutiny:

Why not play "a trump"; and go for a
.45 caliber SIG-Sauer P220A?:uhoh:

CZF,

If I can find a nice PCR that would be an option. It is particularly funny that the P01s I've seen and handled haven't done much for me considering how much I really do love the PCR. Another option, the main 75 varient I'm thinking about right now is the BD. I have a regular 75 for the condition one option another of the exact same gun w/ a decocker would give me a lot of choices for winter carry when in a CCW state.

denfoote,

I was wondering how long until I someone with the same kind of sense of humor as mine would pop up.

Ala Dan,

Hmmm, a SIG suggestion? What a surprise, what made you change? I thought you hate SIGs:D .

Seriously, SIGs are great guns but SIGs and HKs just don't do it for me, with the exception of the 239. I suppose I could consider a 239 for a carry gun though.

Something a little different, a SIG P239. They come in 9mm and .357SIG/.40S&W. The 9mm would make a smaller bite into your funds when buying ammo.

The P239 is around $600. They have a slim grip. They are one of the most pleasant shooting pistols I've tried. They are accurate and highly reliable. It has a very smooth DA/SA action.

Good luck,
Rich
ps If you can, find a rental range and try before you buy.

ps If you can, find a rental range and try before you buy. I have shot two, one a rental 9mm and one a .40s&w that a cop at another lane at the range was shooting and was nice enough to let me try. I thought they were both very smooth and very accurate guns. I was very impressed.

You know, I've been thinking about that one anyway as a possibility this summer so I didn't include it on the list of ways to spend the current extra bit of cash. Good idea though. If you mean in addition to any plans I may have already had I guess that would fit under "wildcard".

Save up some more $ and buy/build yourself a race gun.

That will keep you occupied for quite sometime ;)

But it isn't my money, so good luck on spending it. :D

I didn't vote......out of your post id choose:

1. SPringfield XD
2. 1911 or Vaquero
3. 22 pistrol or the gunleather thang.

If'n it was my money:

1. For Carry: A quality 1911
2. For Range: XD, Vaquero, BHP, Center-fire Rifle
3. WIld Card: Jeez, the list would suck bandwidth to the point of locking up every computer in North America.:D

Get a Springfield Loaded- they rock. I am pretty much on a 1911 kick right now so that is what I would get. Wildcard? Well that opens up a lot of other options. Hmmm- Gotta good combat shotgun- NO?- GET ONE. (Rem. 870 Police or Mossberg 590a1)- For about a c note more you could get a postban AR variant- be it a Bushmaster, Colt- whatever. Do you already have a good plinking 22? NO? GET ONE. You could get a Ruger Mk II and be a happy man. Get it? Got it? Good. :D

Why not get a Taurus M905!! You know you want one???!!! ;)

BTW, yeah, I got bit by my new 605 on the first shot (if you have seen the photo, that's what that red spot is on the target...my blood), but I jumped right back on the horse and fired another 149 rounds over the last two weeks!! The recoil from the lighter weight bullets is punishing, but the heavier ones are not bad and the webbing on my thumb is almost healed!!

Why not get a Taurus M905!! You know you want one???!!! Sniff. Because it doesn't come out until summer. It will be a summer or fall purchase. But I have money burning a hole in my pocket now!:D

It isn't all an "either or" you know. I'll be sure to leave some for the necessities :D

My wife hit the number and I had some ~play money~ to spend.
I called CDNN and got a Witness Tactical II in .40 ( $299) and a Saiga .308 ($229). I love my CZ75 with the OKO and I really like this Witness for carry. Putting thin grips on the Witness and a Pistol grip on the Saiga....I feel like I am stealing....best bang for the buck since my Makarov.

How about a range gun you can carry, or a carry gun you can take to the range...in either case the Sig P225 or P228 fits the bill nicely!

chaim

flashbackk,

Can you get peep sights or ghost rings for the Saiga? If so I have been starting to think that, despite being an AK action, I wouldn't mind a $300 .308.

Berg01,

A SIG is a possibility (I didn't put all the gun possibilities down, only the more likely ones). However, other than the 239 the only SIGs I'd consider are used due to the prices.

Rich357,

I'm not that big a Glock fan. I'd like the XD but for Glock I'd only consider the 26, 36 or 30 due to their size. I can see it for the smallest of them when I make it to a carry state. I'm also mainly a 9mm and .45acp fan in autos (though I will someday own a 10mm I don't want any more .40s, in fact I've sold the one I own, and I don't want a .357sig).

I am a big revolver guy and I have bought one recently with plans for a couple more. The .44mag and the L-frame are both possibilities.

The Walther P99 is a possibility as well, though probably in the form of the SW99 (I like the "Made in the USA" label a lot better than "Made in Germany", I am one of the few that like them about equally cosmetically, and the $100 price difference is nice). I wouldn't mind adding another 9mm (I only have one right now and I really do love the chambering).

For the SIGs see what I said to Berg01.

Yeah, I have to admit that I want one too!! ;)

I'm a little bit reticent about volunteering my services to Taurus as a beta tester again, after the PT-145 fiasco, though!!

chaim,

go for the "wildcard" .22lr snub maybe a Taurus 94. Great rev on it's own but also a great little rev to use for practice in place of your .357 snub.

I didn't vote, because I would want to know where you are going to grad school. The location could affect your choice.

*wildcard*

Sooner or later, we all accumulate enough hardware that we need a safe place to store it.
For all practical purposes, whatever gun you buy now in the inflated market where you live, will be available to you for probably less money in a more gun friendly State.

Part pooper vote goes to - - no gun, get a safe.
