I have a 45 auto (SA XD) and I am considering a model 22 (yes, the thunder ranch model) for my wife (wink, wink). She shoots my auto just fine so no problems there...

Any thoughts, positive or negative, on the particular handgun?

I have #255 and I like it. It has the lock, of course, and this infuriates some people but I just ignore it.

This is a square butt N frame revolver so people with small hands might find it uncomfortable. The recoil is about what you'd expect from a big bore revolver.

The fit and finish on this model is like all new S&Ws in that it's serviceable but not nearly as pretty as the earlier guns (from the 1960s and 1970s). Some shooters report that these were shooting low. I don't know how common this is but a lot of guns were returned for new, lower front sights to correct the PoA problem.

If you like large caliber, retro-looking revolvers (and I do) you'll probably like this gun. As a stockholder in the company I suggest that everyone on the forum should go out and buy at least one.

My Mod. 22 is #9XX. On for elevation, but a bit off for windage. I corrected this by milling the appropriate side of front sight, to end up with .100" front (something like .015" left & .010" right side). My revolver shoots under 2" @ 25 yds. with 230 gr. jacketed H.P's. I detest the lock. The MIM hammer, trigger & internals suck, but are well executed/finished. I did trigger job that took double action pull to 8.5 lbs.-quite smooth. Oh. I also removed Clint Smith's ad from grips and added a Tyler grip adapter-in keeping with flavor or feel of 40's era revolver. Mines a keeper.

I took a good long look at Mod. 22s at the SHOT Show and decided that they had the ugliest grips (Thunder ranch) I ever saw on a factory gun. You can remedy that , of course, by throwing them away and getting your choice of some good aftermarket grips from many makers. I don't hink I will buy one, however, although like Saxon Pig, I am a big stockholder. I don't think the gun will be any better than any of the several model 1917s. including target models, that I have. It definately won't outshoot them. Just my 2 cents. Ed.

I have a TR 22 and I really like it. I sent it to S&W for the Master Revolver Action Job, and it came back very smooth. The sights hit at POA for me, so no problem there. I like the looks of the gun and the fact that it is a square-butt frame, plus I like N-frames anyway.
