Police chief shoots himself in faked traffic stop

Just goes to show that "ordinary" gun-toters aren't the only ones who resemble Goofus McDuck sometimes... :D From the Beacon Journal, Ohio (http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/local/4833978.htm):

Moments from area's hall of shame

Lucky you. At this very moment, you are holding in your hands the newest installment of an annual tradition that dates all the way back to the previous century!

OK, tradition ain't what it used to be, at least in the newspaper biz. But 'tis the season to be thankful for things large and small.

The small favor we bestow upon you today is the annual presentation of the Bobby Awards.

Please hold your applause until all of the winners are announced. Thank you.

Unlike those pompous national awards -- the Emmys, the Grammys, the Tonys -- the Bobbys are close to home. They recognize the best and the worst, the goofiest and the dumbest, the oddest and most embarrassing events our region had to offer.

Official disclaimer: The Bobbies are not only highly subjective but random, biased, slanted, insensitive and unfair. And therein lies their beauty.

BARNEY FIFE AWARD: One fine morning in March, in the little town of Perrysville, near Ashland, the chief of police walks into the police garage and accidentally fires a shot through the windshield of his cruiser. But that's the least of it. To cover his mess, he drives out to a country road and fakes a traffic stop. While reporting the stop over the radio, he fires a shot into the ground to make the dispatcher think somebody is shooting at him. Then he accidentally hits the magazine button on his gun and his ammo drops out. As he tries to reload, he accidentally shoots himself in the leg. Mayberry lives.

There's a lot of other good stuff in their awards... see URL for more fun and games.

Something about compounding mistakes by trying to cover them up, keep's going through my head. WHAT a hoot! (Glad it's only his leg and his pride though!)

Preach, don't know if I can top that, but I'll try:

At a certain police department whose initials are IPD and whose HQ is near where the Pacers play basketball (that ought to muddy it up enough), a commander of a certain unit "dropped a 9mm round on the floor which caused the round to fire up toward the ceiling lodging in an electrical conduit." A memo was circulated advised of the highly unstable nature of this particular lot of ammo.:D

Definitely a Barney Fife award!

I can't, however, imagine anybody over the age of 19 thinking they could pull something like that off....

Makes you wonder, as someone mentioned , about some things that ACTUALLY happen.

Years ago our PD rec'd new squad cars. New look, light bars, inside and out a new look. New shotguns also came in. Seniority dictated the use of new goodies, Senior officer assists in a prowler call, had retrieved shotgun, finishes up and put shotgun back in cruiser rack. Back to the staton...cruising down the avenue, lunchtime, "humm wonder if I removed round from chamber". Reaches over WHILE driving, and yep, pulls trigger to check. Hole in new squad car roof, damaged light bar, temporary deafness , and hitting a parked car...answered his query.

---and now the rest of the story---

Glad this came back up since I'd forgotten about it. Seems like there's a whole lot more to it than the papers reported.

Seems like TIMOTHY L SOMMER -A 433520 was guilty of far more than being a dufas.

The sad part--- His **esteeemed majesty Gov. Bob Taft**:barf: insists he won't allow us normal law abiding ***subjects*** to defend ourselves unless the Chiefs of Police agree. All I have to say is whatta ya afraid of Bobby boy,,,we'll defend ourselves against scum like this?? Who watches the watchers indeed!

Does the Chief still have a job? I hope not.

Another link to Sommer that provides a little more information...

I don't know who is worse, Sommer or the folks that hired him. Apparently before being chief, he had been crosswise with the law on several occasions.
