I am new to the Hi Power fan club. I bought a pre owned practical BHP last year, had the mag disconnect disconnected & some minor trigger work done. Now, after about 1000 rounds, she's become a favorite of mine.
Anyway, this got me wondering. I have seen 1911's in many caliber from 22lr to 45 super, has there been a Hi Power in 45 acp? Or is 9mm and 40 S&W it?

Just 9 and .40 unless I'm missing something (always possible).

They have a 40 S&W and you can get an aftermarket .22lr upper.

9mm, 357 Sig, 40 S&W, 22 LR are the only ones I'm aware of.....(I'm missing is the 357 Sig)

Hello. FN also produced some in .30 Luger as well. The pistol as we know it has not been chambered for .45 ACP as its grip dimensions are too small for the cartridge's LOA.

FN makes the Hi Power. Browning has never manufactured a single HP. They are simply a marketing company for Fabrique National of Herstal, Belgium.

All Browning Hi Powers are FN's, but not all FN Hi Powers are Brownings.

According to my FN and Hi Power books, FN made the Hi Power in:

9x19 (also known as 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9mmNATO)

.30 Luger (very few in US, mostly for those countries where their civilians cannot own a pistol in the "military" caliber)

.40 S&W Rather recent compared to the 9mm. And it is not simply a barrel swap. The .40 S&W has an additional lug on the barrel and a beefier slide.


To my knowledge FN has never produced the HP in .357 Sig. You CAN buy aftermarket barrels that drop in or will after a little gunsmithing.

Thanks...I was really curious about the calibers this design is available in. The 1911 just seems to morph into so many diff't things...poly gun, double stack, single stack, 6" barrel, 3" barrel, DAO, the variations just seem endless. I was just curious if the same type of versatility were available in the BHP :confused:

Hi Powers should be in 9mm but I can see the benefits of .40 for those which have standardized on the round for personal/LE/Secuity type reasons. Further, I have to believe that the .357 SIG will greatly diminsh the service life of a Hi Power based on posts by Bruce Gray regarding the reduced service life of SIG P series guns in .357 SIG.

If OAL is the only issue in precluding the .45 ACP then does that mean someone could render a Hi Power in .45 GAP? Also, were there ever any Hi Powers or clones in .41 AE?

Yes, there were conversions to .41 AE. You can still find one now and again on ebay.
