First of all welcome to the forum!
22LR handgun is a perfect choice for target shooting. Find a S&W Model 41 is a great quality gun that you can be very competitive with.
I would check with your local gun ranges because they generally have a bulleye league to start out at.
Hope this helps. :)

Yes it helps alot thanks :)
The other great thing is that a .22 wont burn a hole in my budget :D
I think the S&W 41 is a little out of my range right now. Im looking for something in the $350 range to start

Another Big Welcome To The High Road-
Come on in, and pull up a chair. Loads of good information, and people
can be found here. First of all, I would get acquainted with a bit of the
informal target shooting, using a .22 caliber handgun for starters~!
Being really good with any handgun takes patience and practice; lot's
of practice. Many of us here devote many hours too handgun shooting;
both informal, and competition style. Another thing, one entering the
shooting sports needs to consider is the cost of ammo. You can buy
a brick of 500 .22LR's for 'bout $9.88 + tax; but larger caliber's of 500
rounds could and would run into hundreds of dollars~!
Many good revolvers and semi-auto's are on the market that are just
the ticket for beginners. Any Smith & Wesson model 17, 18, 41, or 617
would be a most excellent choice in revolvers; whereas the Ruger MKII's
and MKIII's, Browning Buckmarks, Smith & Wesson 22A's, or Beretta
Neo's would get you started in semi-auto's.
Finally, get some type of firearms training; as its always helpful. Follow
the instructions of a qualified rangemaster and practice the safety
rules and you will be well on your way to the most enjoyable sport
known too man~!:D Have fun, and stay safe.

I like my Ruger Mk II but there are many others available out there. 22lr is a great caliber to do some target shooting...new or used, there should be plenty of choices for you.
Like I said, I like my Mk II. I've also had limited experience w/ the Hi Standard pistol...very accurate & seemed to be a nice little shooter (sorry I don't know what they go for). Also, the Buckmark works well too.

Contact the NRA and they can stir you to your state association. The state assn. then can help with getting you hooked up with bullseye clubs in your state.

What do you think of the 5" Walther P22?
I took a look at one today and i really like the feel of the gun and everyone i talk to loves theirs.

The P22 is not competitive, IMO, even in the 5" model, but it's a fun lil plinker.
It has served me well in introducing new shooters.
However, mine only reliably digests the higher velocity CCI ammunition
(e.g. CCI Mini-Mag).
There are also some competition-grade .22LR pistols to be had on the used-market. There is one by Baikal, I think it's an IZH___something or other? Anyways, it gets good review .. maybe someone will tell of it.
(edit : Baikal IZH35.: I understand these are somewhat roughly finished with a rough grip and spartan, but they purportedly run well.)

I agree that something like the Ruger MKII would be a good choice. Also, my room-mate ("sheep" on this forum), has a Walther P22 and absolutely loves it.
The other great thing is that a .22 wont burn a hole in my budget
Not by any means - you can't beat $10 for 500 rounds of fun :D

You won't find a better beginner's .22 Auto than the Ruger. Learn to shoot with it. Later on you can go to a fancier gun.
One thing I've learned from ten years of league shooting: at 50 feet, it's not the gun, it's the shooter. Good shooters with Rugers regularly clean the clocks of mediocre shooters with 41's and Hi-Standards.

If you want to find out everything about bullseye pistol including what equipment you need, what the course of fire is, and how to shoot master scores go to http://www.bullseyepistol.com and start reading. This site is the definitive spot for bullseye competititors (wannabe's and grizzled vets alike). It is well organized and will keep you occupied for days. If you want to learn how to shoot the right way, find the U.S Army Marksmanship Unit Pistol Guide on the site and follow it's teachings exactly.
