Still waiting for the scope I ordered and the ammo as well. As soon as I get it out to the range I'll let you know how she handles. I can't wait to go for small game with it!

Geez, I feel like a kid with a new toy!

I don't hunt with mine....

I purchased a Marlin with a bull barrell as soon as I found one. (Trigger is horrible BTW)

I put a BSA scope that I had laying around and its turned into one of my favorite range guns. 100 - 125yrds, this thing will group as tight as my .22-250 that cost 4 times as much as the Marlin. WInd seems to play little with the round.

I love this thing. I am pretty much a paper puncher but if that danged squirrel that keeps chattering ever show himself....Watch out!

The first shot I took with mine after sighting it in was at a rock squirrel (rat with a long tail) in the horse pen at 80 yards. Dropped him in his tracks, exit wound was about 1.5".

I took it out to a friend's who has a 4-5 acre horse pasture full of prairie dogs. We only had about 15 minutes of light left but we managed to drop a dozen of them at 80 to 200 yards. POP-thump, POP-thump, POP-thump, POP-thump. No signs of any survivors.

Mine is the Savage with a 4-12 Tasco scope.

Darn it! Scope came today and tomorrow I mount and bore sight the darned thing. Now I just need the ammo. I hope my Ruger shoots as well as the rifles I am reading about here.

ultimate varmint cartridge? what sort of accuracy is it capable of @ 200yrds (inches) and how much does the wind shift it @ that range.

Wish I could tell you but the ammo crunch has me sitting here with a beautiful new bore sighted rifle and no ammo to shoot out of it. Sort of like having cigarettes and no matches!

Let you know as soon as I can unless someone else touches in on this one.

I have a Ruger lever action in.17and it is quite accurate and its pretty impressive on ground squirrels
Here in the SF bay area it appears the ammo shortage is letting up. I'm heading out to the sticks Memorial Day--
Squirrels beware:eek:

Ammo has been available here since I bought my Savage last Sept. It's expensive, but one shop has it for $9.95 a box. Most of the others are $11-12 a box.

There are some nice pics at the Go Go Varmint Go Message Board regarding the terminal ballistics of the .17HMR round.

I have been using a Ruger 77/17 as my "walk-around" groundhog rifle this spring and summer. Have killed about 20 g'hogs and a dozen crows with the little .17. Range varies from 35 to just over 150 yards, based on laser rangefinder readings. If I do my part and place the little 17 grain bullet correctly, only one shot is required. That said . . . a couple g'hogs made it back to their holes and I felt bad about that. :(

I picked the lightweight blued model because I already have heavier centerfire .22's that work fine when a heavier, more accurate rifle is needed. Had a local gunsmith do a trigger job on the rifle and it turned out to be about three pounds with no creep.

Accuracy of the little .17 HMR is amazing. Most five shot groups at 100 yards are less than an inch. Sometimes I don't do that well with my 22/250. :cuss:

I've enjoyed the little rifle . . .
