Two of my buddies showed up to day, each with a brand-new Rock Island 1911 45. They were $400 OTD. So how is a rock island and who are they made buy???

Check out www.m1991.org, they have a whole section on the Rock Islands. From what I've seen here owners really like them. Consensus is that they're good entry level 1911s. They're made in the Phillipines by, i believe, Armscor. Someone will be along shortly with better info.

That should be m1911.org. The Rock Island is a very good pistol. I have shot them and know several people that own them. The 1911 model can be bought for between 300.00 and 400.00. A good buy for a dependable 45.

Rock Island Armory makes an excellent Mil-Spec version of the 1911. I have two close friends who have purchased these guns and have had several opportunities to extensively test the gun. They are Manufactured by Armscor which has its production facilities located in the Phillipines. Customer Service has also been excellent and I will be purchasing one of their commander length pistols myself later this fall when these guns begin to roll off their lines. Again these are highly recommended. As far as price goes the guns I have seen were purchased NIB from a gentleman on gunbroker who goes by Belshire (located in Nashville, TN) and cost $310 OTD.

I think I bought mine RIA 1911 from the same FFL dealer at Nashville, TN. He offered a good price for it.

As stated above, I remember when Belshire had some really good deals. I just did a search on GunBroker, and he is not a registered user for some reason.

Everytime I pickup my RIA I say to myself, "Damn I love this gun!". I have a full size and I haven't had a single issue with it that wasn't limp wrist or magazine related (I have since rectified both of those issues with some training and milsurp mags). Mine even fed Winchester USA hollowpoints from the factory without a single problem. In fact, that's precisely how I keep mine, loaded with 230-grain hollow points.

FYI, mine ran $325 OTD at a local gun show, it was the last one the dealer had. Said they had sold like hotcakes and he couldn't wait to get another. I know I love mine!

PS: Round count is nearing 1000 for me now and I've had about 3 or 4 malfunctions early on from limp-wristing and the Novaks magazine failed to feed the 8th round several times, until I swapped magazines.

Here's another vote for the Rock Island. Has just worked since day 1 and if you want to dress it up, most if not all aftermarket 1911 parts willl fit.

Just to clarify, Armscor is the importer, not the manufacturer.
Twin Pines is the company that makes the RIA's.


And Bellshire is still listed on gunbroker, has an RIA .38super listed (and a bunch of Mossberg 500's)

Well yes, Twin Pines is legally the manufacturer, but then
it actually subcontracts all manufacture out to Armscor!
:)

All RIA's are thus Armscor-built, and in the case of the United States, they
are Armscor-marketed as well.


Here in the Philippines, Twin Pines sells RIA 1911's though its own retail chain,
in direct competition with Armscor's 1911's (sold by Squires Bingham and a
busload of other indie gunstore chains).
