I've been looking at getting a .308 savage.

I've looked at a model 10 package for $410 and another model w/ out scope for same money (don't know the model for this one)

Earlier at an out of town Kmart I found a .30 - 06 model 111 fxp3 for $380 scope included

Would this be better?

I consider the calibers even and only leaned towards .308 for cheaper ammo.

I don't know the ins and outs of the models.

This will be my first rifle of this kind so I appreciate any advice?

What do you want to do with this gun?
.308=targets and hunting
.30-06=hunting and targets
Its pretty much the same difference. Something to think about is that heavier guns are better for target shooting and lighter guns are better for carrying. You may want one of each. After carrying a Savage 10fp heavy barrel over hill and dale for one hunting season, I purchased a sporter weight .30-06.

I do kind of like the savage package deals. I know some will say that the scopes are cheap, and they are right. But I am more the kind of guy that is looking at the initial cost and will worry about upgrading optics down the road. Just this weekend I saw a Savage package deal on a heavy barrelled synthetic .223 with a 4-12 power scope (I did not catch the brand). The idea of an out-of-the-box and ready-to-shoot gun at an affordable price really sounds good. I can always have fun accessorizing down the road.

Good luck choosing. I'm probably going to wind up with that .223 package deal.
