Thumb placement:?

Got an airsoft bolt-rifle, but it is rather bulky. I can't comfortably fit my right thumb around the stock. I've been keeping the thumb along beside the trigger-finger, and it doesn't feel bad. Is there any problem with doing this?

Not with an airsoft or airgun. Real gun other than a .22, yes, that would be unpleasant to your face upon recoil.

If you've got is securely mounted to your shoulder, should it be a problem? I'm planning to try it with my 30-30 later this week, so any further details about the recoil effects would be appreciated, ahead of time.

Okay, get your rifle and unload/make it safe.
Hold it like you're describing, and slowly push the barrel against a wall to simulate the effects/angles of recoil.
Imagine quick recoil instead of a slow push against the wall.
See why it would be unpleasant? :)
