I read (on the Internet) that the .357 Sig cartridge will fire from both .40 cal and 9mm pistols. Is that true?

No! If the extractor will hold the case tight enough it can be fired in the 40, but the bullet would probably never touch the barrel. Will not chamber in the 9mm. You can get a 357sig barrel for most 40 guns to convert them.
