I recently bought a RRA AR-15 with the A4 receiver, I have an older 30mm aimpoint I would like to mount on it, where is a good place to find base that will mouny to the A4 receiver w/30mm rings ??
I found a link to www.gggaz.com who has the military aimpoint mount but I dont see the need for a $170 +- buck mount....

Billy-
You can try ARMS, Knights Armament. SWFA - no experience dealing with them - had some different mounts availible as well.
I've got the GGG Cantilever mount on mine, as it put the irons in the lower third of the optic.

I just bought a Bushmaster carbine and I too am faced with the decision of how to mount an Aimpoint on a flat top. I have asked around a lot and read up at AR15.com, where there are a few good threads. My criteria are as follows:
1. I want to be able to use a flip-up rear sight, preferably with the sights showing up in the bottom third of the Aimpoint.
2. I want the Aimpoint mounted forward of the receiver a bit for quicker aquisition and less obstruction of the operator field of view.
With this in mind, I have found two options that I am seriously considering.
The first possibility is the ARMS #38 swan sleeve with a #22M68 Aimpoint mount up front. This will run about $165 for the #38 and another $100 for the #22M68. With the optional spacer, I think this puts the iron sights in the bottom third of the Aimpoint. Can anyone confirm? Also, does anyone have any advice about whether to use the extended or the super extended swan sleeve?

The other possibility I am considering is the GG&G cantilever ring with a flip up rear sight (available from GG&G, ARMS, or Bushmaster, among others). This will cost about $212 for the ring (ouch!) and another $100 or so for the flip up rear sight. According to Erick here, as well as others I have spoken with, this will put the iron sights in the lower third of the Aimpoint.

Bily, I feel much as you do about the price of all these little pieces of stationary metal being entirely too pricey, but I have not seen any other options that will meet my needs. If you don't care about using the iron sights as backup, you could always just use the mount made by Aimpoint:

I have played with these and they have a torque-limiting attachment screw that is pretty cool and makes the device easy to take on and off. So, you can mount the Aimpoint directly above the receiver with no backup iron sights with this Aimpoint mount, or with a similar mount by ARMS or GG&G, all of which are in the $100 neighborhood. I have seen cheaper mounts that will work, but I am told that the more expensive ones are precision milled to the point that they can be taken on and off without losing zero, while the cheaper ones are not.

Bily was saying that the price was an issue and that he didn't want to spend upwards of $170 on mounts etc. He could get one of the mounts like the Aimpoint or the basic ARMS for around $100 for now, with the option of adding a BUIS later for another $75-100 or so, provided that he is willing to go without the BUIS for the time being.

It is just hard for me to believe there are no mounts at a lower $$ but its looking like I may end up with them anyway ...
Chairman Meow, thanks for the help.. :)

I use the #38 EX Swan sleeve with an ARMS #22M68 throw lever ring/mount for the Aimpoint M2. The nice thing about the Swan sleeve is it covers the whole flattop and employs the #40 flip up back up sight. Using the 38Ex positions the Aimpoint forward near the handguards. If you don't want to use the Swan sleeve, then a spacer is required to raise the #22M68 to gain co-witness sighting. Using the Swan sleeve, you can view the AR front sights in the lower 30 percent of the field of view. It works great on my Bushy carbine ie; Homeland Defense rifle. ;)

Chairman
I have used both those set ups you picture, extensively. I used the GG&G set up with a Bushmaster Flat top and I used the ARMS set up with the same rifle and a KAC RAS II. Without the RAS II, I would go with the GG&G set-up. I really liked it a lot. I switched because I couldn't use that mount with the RAS II.
I have both a GG&G BUIS and an ARMS BUIS. Don't have a preference, both worked fine.
Let me give you a piece of advice. Give these guys a call and tell them what you want to do. They are the best AR type place I have ever dealt with. They know what they are talking about.
