Oh, sorry... I had El Vaquero for lunch! :p
That's the darn funniest question (that's supposed to be serious) I think I've ever read.

I don't carry, but I would just tell them the truth - after all lies are bad.
"Oh that smell? It's the solvent I use for my concealed carry gun."
Don't forget to smile. :D

You could say that the smell is because you ate bananas with your cereal that morning.

From my post to the What is the strangest, goofiest, scary thing you've had happen while carrying? (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=139953) thread on TFL:
One day back in March I was wandering around the local shopping mall when a guy passed by me in the bookstore and something caught my attention. It took me a minute to figure out what it was, then I walked over to him and said quietly, "Excuse me, I don't want to alarm you, but are you carrying?" His eyes got big and he quickly patted himself down and checked to make sure he wasn't printing.
Me - "No, you're not printing, it's cool."
Him - "How'd you know I was packing?"
Me - "I guessed. You absolutely REEK of CLP."
We had a good laugh.

I'm going to say that if you can actually smell your firearm while you are carrying it, then you're using too much of whatever you use.

A while ago I had two roomates who weren't big fans of firearms and everytime I cleaned them my whole apt smelled of Hoppes. Maybe it is just the brand but that stuff has a strong scent.

Hey, stop laughing! Hoppe's No. 9 makes a great after shave lotion. It stings for a moment, of course, but stops the bleeding, and you smell great all day long.

Use MPC FP-10. Aside from being a great CLP, it smells like cinnamon chewing gum! Who says a gun can't legally help you get the ladies?

I've been using bacon grease. I can't smell it when the gun is on my person, but I do seem to attract dogs and fat guys.

For God's sake, don't use Shooters Choice! What a stench! Good stuff but come on! I stick to Rig 2, but I'm running out and I can't seem to find it anymore. Definitely non-offensive and doesn't seep out of clothing. Easy to use in a closed house (winter) also.

Used #9 for years but recently the wife complained about the smell..So I buy some Kleenbore solvent..The first time I use it and she comes home from work and she can't breath..Goes outside and all is ok..Danm kleenbore caused an allergic reaction.. Got some FP-10 and that is allright but still "need" #9 ..Found that if I burn a scented candle while cleaning guns she has no problems..
Now I have to go to Yankee Candle, just down the road,to get cleaning supplies..

If someone can smell your CCW and they complain about it.
Is this considered brandishing? :p

Solution, be like me...scary enough in itself.
Carry a Glock, if you clean it like me you will smell like citrus cleaner, armor-all and delo grease. Folks will think you detail cars or sumtin.
Seriously though, use less solvent and finish with dry patches and rags. I have had one bottle of #9 and one bottle of Benchrest copper solv last for years, use sparingly, wipe gun down with non stinky oil when done.

Yeah, just explain that you were playing with some bananas. I'm pretty sure that should end the questions.

~sigh~ i just HAD to marry a woman who puts Banannas in the same category as Chittlin's or Durien(sp? the fruit that smells like an old diaper)!!!
seriously wife can just about stand Hoppe's enough to be in the house when i use it, but i'm gonna have to find something else if she's ever going to actually CLEAN a gun herself  . Oh and don't EVEN mention RemOil!! bought a bottle of that the day the Wal-mart was out of the Hoppe's brand oil, everything it touched either got a bath (re-No.9'ed or literally washed) or thrown away! had to keep my hands on my side of the bed till the smell wore off even!!

I knocked over a bottle of Hoppes once after cleaning my guns. I don't know if the smell went a way or we just got used to smelling it :p. My wife sure wasn't happy about it. Tip make sure all the oil is wiped of you and your gun befor you rack the slide.

You know, I've never actually smelled Hoppes? I mostly use Break Free CLP, though on occasion I've use the generic bottles of "gun oil" and "bore solvent" that come in the cleaning kits you buy at Wal-Mart.
I LIKE the smell of CLP.

Ding-dong, you're wrong!

Gunpowder is my fave, with Hoppes #9 a close second.

Easy solution. Use MPro 7 to clean the gun (very very faint smell like auto anti-freeze if you almost put your nose in it. It took me thirty years to find a gun cleaner that my wife could stand). Then use Breakfree Lubricant Preservative (That's CLP without the solvent.) It has an extremely low odor that disappears after 5 minutes.

The guy I bought my CZ 85 Combat from cleaned it with some pleasant orange-smelling stuff. It wasn't really strong, but it's quite persistent, as it's still detectable after several hundred rounds and several cleanings with #9. Anyone know what it might have been?

Am I the only one that has a little urge to pull out his CCW at work and sniff it because you love that smell?

LOL as i found out....if you spill solvent on you....clean it up. I have a bit of a chemical burn still on me. Cleaning a gun while in nothing but shorts probaly a bad thing :).
But yea id think if someone smells your weapon....something is fishy. or just use more aftershave instead of #9 :D

Bowlcut - what kind of solvent were you using that gave you a chemical burn??? I got a drop of Gun Scrubber in my eye one time. I thought it was gonna hurt like crazy, but it didn't even sting. Rinsed it out anyway.
I have an apron that I got from the kitchen of one of my past jobs. I put it on when I'm cleaning just so I dont' have to worry about getting anything on my clothes.

'Smell the gun'
The new album by Spinal Tap.
Ok this is the funniest thread I've read all day.
And in case your wondering ( I was) after a little stealthy under the desk so as not to scare the co-workers sniff, you will be happy to know my Glock smells like teen spirit. And victory. And CLP. And leather.

I read in some gun forum about someone following a Hoppe #9 smell at a gun show & ended up at the Hoppe sales booth. The Hoppe salesman had poured some #9 onto a small piece of rug he carried with him - - he said it always worked in attracting 'smellers' to his booth.

you know im sure these guns that are carried in musty Thunder wear holsters dont smell too swuft..............P U
Guns...your supposed to clean them?:scrutiny:
I have caught the scent of others, especially new shooters/CCW'ers.
My personal guns giving a scent--no.
I'd heard the rumor about dogs trained to pick up the scent of gun oil/solvents. I was around one of these supposed dogs, he didn't come to me, he did sniff out a rag that had had solvent used in a cabinet.
I even unloaded and placed my CCW in a sack when they came back into the room, "Rover" never even gave the sack a glance.

"I'd heard the rumor about dogs trained to pick up the scent of gun oil/solvents"
I have seen this mentioned several times on the RV forums. Supposedly the Canadian Customs officials have been known to search vehicles, especially motorhomes and trailers, using trained dogs. They don't like Americans bringing guns into Canada (the customs officials, that is, the dogs don't care either way).
Chanel No. 5, Hoppes No. 9 - what's the big deal? Just don't use too much of either one.

A little "Red," or "Opium" goes quite well with it - and I get a few dazzling smiles because of it!
Personally, I love going out for a sandwich after a day at the range at "The Brown Burro," reeking of gunpowder and getting into lively conversations about shooting! The occasional flatlander tourists' horrified look is delightful - especially when half-a-dozen of us start comparing carry guns (has happened twice in the last three years)!
Colorado Cougar - I only wear Chanel when I'm not wearing anything else. . .
