Informal Survey: What is your favorite Ruger single-action??

June 2, 2006, 11:00 PM
I'm a HUGE fan of the Bisley grip, preferably in SS with a relatively short barrel ( less than 6").

Having said this, my next gun will be a Bisley Hunter with the 7.5" barrel (only because they don't make this in 5.5"). Accusport special runs are too hard to get in this area...

For my hand shape, the Bisley grip fits best, and I like the hammer and trigger feel as well..

Not what yu'd expect...but the Bearcat. Still preer to old oridinal Al. frame version.

May not be the hot-nuts hunting rig, but are still my favorites.

Well, I go back to 1969 when I picked up a .44 Flat Top , slightly used, for $87--which I still have. What gets used most, however, is a NM blued 4 5/8" .45 Convertible. For some reason I shoot it better than almost anything else with either caliber. It's light for the caliber, short, and handy. Not quite as nicely made as the recent NM .357 Flat Top commemorative but ok for a using gun.

Some times the magic works, and some times it doesn't.

I like the New Vaq. Went and bought one. But I just couldn't leave it stock :). SBH hammer, slimmed grips (to be replaced soon with Eagle Gunfighters).

Old model single six has to be #1 for me, followed by the Old model Blackhawk .41 mag, then the Bisley Blackhawk in .41 mag, then the New Model single six (hey, it's still a great gun!), then the Super Blackhawk in .44 mag, then the old Vaquero in .45 Colt. Totally subjective, but of what I've got, that's how I like them, comparatively, and I'm not unfond of the low end of the list, either, I'm just comparing among my Ruger SA's.

My favorite is one I made - a new 4.6" SS SBH with a QPR Bird's Head Grip fitted - and .44 Specials and Russians. I limit it's .44 Magnum use to my wimpy loads, maxing out with my 300gr LSWC @ 885 fps. I somehow lost interest in my 5.5" SS Bisley BH in .45 Colt - and recently traded it. I shot my 4.6" BHG and Bisley-hammered Vaquero in .45 Colt more - especially after I found a load that would hit coincident POI/POA. I really like my new SS SSM 4.6" BHG, too... my 115gr LRNFP's in that .32M are just fun. Hmmm, maybe I am just in my BHG 'period'...

New model BH .45 Colt

My first "Old Model" Ruger Blackhawk .357. It has a 6.5 inch barrel and quite a bit of blue wear. It was used and came sighted-in for me. I didn't even have to touch the sights. Used it for a house gun for a while, shot Hunter's Pistol Silhouette, and small game with it. I also carried it deer hunting at times, but never got a shot at a deer.

I have another Old Model with a 9mm auxiliary cylinder. I am more familiar with the original's trigger and shoot it better.

A .41 Magnum Blackhawk would give it a run for it's money, but I haven't bought one yet.

The Super Single Six..22rf with interchangable 22 Mag cylinder. Adjustable sights. A fun gun that worked with quiet CB Caps, std velocity Shorts, or 22 Mag.

I sold mine in 68..used the proceeds to pay for blood tests, marriage license, 3 days in a motel, and a fee for the JP in Poplarville, Mississippi.

Best trade I ever made, but, I intend to buy another Ruger Super Single soon as I can find one.

Kept the wife though.

Buckeye 10mm/.38-40

June 3, 2006, 02:29 PM
I have a strange love/hate relationship with the Ruger single-action revolvers. I have owned several, including a .38-40/10mm Buckeye Blackhawk, a Mag-Na-Port Predator, a Super Single-Six topped with a 2x Leupold, a .45 LC Bisley Vaquero, and a few others. In the end, all of them became trade fodder.

I now only own one single-action, a fixed sight Freedom Arms 1997 in .357 Magnum. The only Ruger I sometimes miss is the Predator.

I've had at one time a SS SBH (custom 5 1/2" from a 7 1/2" before Ruger announced this barrel length), New Mod BHs (.357 & 45 LC) and Single Sixes in .22 (Bisley) and a .32 H&R (4 3/4" beauty). Of all I think I would want my .357 Mag. Blackhawk back.

I have been thinking about another SBH but then I realized why I had gotten rid of the last one, it rapped my knuckles when I fired full house 240 grn loads and the set of pactmeyer (sic) grips did not look right on a pseudo "Old West" six-gun (this was before the Ruger Bisley). If I find a nice SBH Bisley in 44 Mag. at a good price then all bets are off.

My Bis-Hawk .45 convertable.

Fun project...

June 3, 2006, 05:31 PM
Of course.its my Ruger Old Army..SS....bought in 1976....have shot it more than any other gun I have. Added a second ROA..when the 5.5s came blue....

June 3, 2006, 05:37 PM
Favorite ruger? Bi-quero in .45 Colt with a 4 inch barrel. blue and cch finish. sweet carry gun.

June 3, 2006, 06:54 PM
Joe Hatley,

How did you get Bisley 45 Colt/ACP convertible? I called Ruger to see if they would fit a 45 ACP cylinder to a 45 Colt Bisley, and they told me they would not do it.

June 3, 2006, 07:46 PM
I'm a HUGE fan of the Bisley grip, preferably in SS with a relatively short barrel ( less than 6")

Well, that's it for me too. Mine is an accusport Bishawk. Stainless steel, 5.5", unfluted & engraved cylinder, and, of course, .41 magnum.

Ruger .41 Magnum Blackhawk (3-screw) 6 1/2"

Give me 4-clicks everytime! :)

June 4, 2006, 11:17 AM
super blackhawk .44 mag. bought my 1st at a pawn shop for $250 in 2002.
it was my cheap therapy to get over the unfounded fear of shooting a .44
which i had never shot b4. five .44 handguns later i'm addicted.........

June 4, 2006, 12:14 PM
At the moment my 2 Blackhawks are my two favorites - both in 357. The 4 5/8" is also equipped with a 9mm cylinder. Saw an Old Model 357 at a gun show a few days ago , it was the 6 1/2" 357 and they had it at $275. It had some finish wear so I am not sure about the price.

I may do some grip and hammer changes later to one or both of my Blackhawks.

June 4, 2006, 12:28 PM
I like the Stainless Blackhawks. The Blued ones have aluminium ejector rod coves and grip frames that wear differntly than the steel and they start to look cheap and cheesy over time.

June 4, 2006, 02:34 PM
That would be Bisley.

June 9, 2006, 01:17 PM
My vote would be the Bisley in .44 mag. Love the looks and the way it handles.

June 9, 2006, 01:33 PM
My favorite was my first .357 of the very last of the old "3-Screw" models

Now, though, it is the Single-Six. I still like the big centerfires, but it takes all day to shoot up $20 of ammo in a Single-Six :D :D :D
