Variations In Weight

I claibrated my Cabelas digital scale this morning and checked a sampling of bullets that I just received.

The bullets are 168gr SMK and 165gr SGK.

There seems to be a variation of between -01 to +01 between a sampling. Is this normal? If it is do you load them all the same or do you apply a slightly different formula to compensate for the differences?

Sierra has a +/- 3 tenth (0.30) gr tolerance with their MatchKing bullets yours fall tight in. I just load them as they are. The little diference won`t matter unless you have a bench rest rifle and are trying to drop the last 0.001" from your groups.

I don't bother weighing Sierra's but the last time I did, they were all within +/- 0.1grs.

Some highpower shooters weigh their completed cartridges and shoot them from heaviest to lightest. The heavier cartridges will tend to give slightly higher velocities. Doing this will somewhat mitigate the affects caused by the rise in ambient temp over the course of the day (air density decreases and pressure increase).

Jmurman,

Weighing quality commercial bullets such as Sierra's is pretty much a waste of time. However, for really good target reloads, it does pay to check the ogive to base measurements on Sierras. They vary in length much more than Lapua bullets do.
