I LIKE Ruger autoloaders. They're quite popular, you know, so I don't think they're what you'd call a "dud". They're not pretty, but they're reliable and cost $200+ less than a Glock.

However, aside from them being big, heavy, ugly and bulky, they are very durable, reliable and a good value if you find a used on for cheap.

Easy pardners, all said jokingly except for the S&W part, was not aware that there was a "Ruger tribe".

The S&W referred to in the linked GT post seems to be one of their DA autos, not the 19666A1 model they're making now. I'm sure they will be able to turn out a reliable 1911, it just feels, well, like Colt revolvers. Wrong.

Maybe if Colt would actually MAKE revolvers anymore, and actually MARKET and/or ADVERTISE them, and sell them at prices people could afford, then the idea of owning a wheelgun with a horsey on it wouldn't seem so strange.

As is, though, I sort of agree with Navy Joe. I don't think they feel wrong, but they're rare. I've seen only a few Colt revolvers in my life. I can only think of two right off the top of my head that I've seen recently; a used Anaconda at a store that's now, sadly, closed and an Officer's Model in .38 Special that's in a local store.

Remember the "compact" S&W Sigma guns?
9mm and .380.
They were very flat and concealable, but according to S&W, they were disposable after 3000rds or so.
I had a 9 that was ok, but no slide stop, and you need a buddy to take it down for cleaning. :rolleyes:
From what I understand, the 9s were so unreliable, they quit making them after a year or two.
The .380 died shortly after.

I have the SW 1911. Its a good gun. I mean a really good gun.

Good company, bad idea:

Taurus=Milenium Plus, the one with simulated wood grip sticker on the polymer frame.

Seems like you guys are getting into the weeds with your personal peeves.

I'm taking "goofy" to be the situation when a decent maker releases a gun that is either a total flop, strangely junky, or flies in the face of everything the company previously stood for.

A bulky, reliable and cheap autoloader seems right up Ruger's alley.

But I think the Sigma, Millenium, 2000 and 9000 are great examples. Quirky, unprecedented and of questionable reliability.

My nominations:
Sig, for the Mauser M2
HK, for the Browning operated USP/Socom line
Walther, for the embarrasingly crummy P22

A Glock SA revolver would top it for me, but Gaston seems to have things under control.

Yes, my original intent was companies that are really good at what they do (Beretta 92/96) then go off and produce something goofy that is just out of their area of expertise.

The GP 100 is one of the best wheelguns out there. Robust, Strong... Come on now. It's a good revolver! It just has a rather poor trigger out of the box...

that is an outstanding 40 cal pistol. It'll outshoot any Glock 40 I have ever fired, feels a whole bunch better in the hand, and doesn't have too bad a trigger. It's only problem is the sights which are/were plastic POS.
From what I have heard they made a bunch of SIGMA'S not up to snuff; you couldn't prove it by me nor anyone of the other folks I know who have had some extensive trigger time on a 40 SIGMA.

I'd have to disagree about the sig pro.

The 2340/2009 SIG is quite nice, with the smoothest DA pull in the SIG lineup, removable fire-control group a la P210, and the most unplastic of the polymer pistols in terms of looks.

A very clever and controllable platform for the 357SIG.

I will admit, that the propriety rail is goofy, but hopefully an adapter will come out, and maybe a polymer SIG with a standard rail.

Colt All-American 2000. But that's almost too easy. From what I hear, the Double Eagle didn't suck, but people didn't want them anyway.

HK VP70Z. Yeah, yeah, innovation, blah, blah, blah. But who can stand to shoot one? I've got car doors with less pull than the trigger on that thing!

Smith & Wesson badly copying Glock with the Smegma (see the court records for details...)

I would say that HK jacking up the price of the USP to make it more "elite" in the hopes it would sell more was goofy... except that it worked! ;)

One bit of general goofiness is when companies stick a date on their 1911 clones in huge letters, then wonder why they get made fun of...

I wonder how many sales these companies lost because they made their guns needlessly ugly? Is there some secret virtue to making your gun look like monkey *** when you don't have to? When Colt un-uglied their 01991, interest in them surged (you can go through old posts in 1911forum.com to see what I mean).

I have tried to like the SIG Pro line. Friend has a 2009 and I have shot it a lot. It is a DUD. Blocky, trigger not as smoth as SIG Classic. Rented the 2340 twice. Same - DUD. The back straps never seem secure. I love my 220 and my 228 but the SIG Pros are DUDS!
