Before I buy a P11, what are my options? I'm wanting something in 9mm that's lighter than my G26 for pocket duty. Comments/suggestions?

You won't be able to find a 9mm that is a really good gun for carrying in your pants pocket. Just too heavy and large, even a PM9. (However, the Rohrbaugh would do, but it costs a $1000.)

Go for the Kel-Tec P3at for true pocket carry.

If you don't need it right this second... Kel-Tec's yet-to-arrive PF-9 looks promising...

My rule of thumb:

1. semi-autos for belt carry.
2. Revolvers for pocket carry.

I suppose there are always exceptions, but the above is a good starting point.

I have a P11 which I do NOT like to shoot, hence don't practice much with it, hence don't carry. That said, it is way too fat to go in any of my pants pockets except the cargo pockets, and there it flops around my knee uncomfortably. The Kahr PM9 seems to be a BIT smaller, but not enough to fit invisibly either. I've never even seen a Rorbaugh, so can't comment except that I couldn't afford it even if it were the right size.

I'd vote with marshall3 - for pocket carry the P3AT is probably the best compromise. In a Desantis pocket holster, it disappears in the front pocket of any of my pants except the tight jeans (that didn't used to be tight.) It's "only" a 380, but it will be there when you need it.

Before anyone considers buying a Rohrbaugh you should visit the Rohrbaugh forum (for which I do not recall the web address). From what I read there 8 or 9 months ago I concluded that Rohrbaughs suck. The first thread I read was started by a guy who had just received a Rohrbaugh, taken it to the range, and had it jam at least once per magazine (I think they are only 6 round mags). IIRC he was told by senior members and moderators that the gun requires a break in period but that it cannot fire more than 50 rounds without being disassembled and cleaned. Apparently the tolerances are extremely tight, maybe too tight.

I am of the opinion that the manufacturer has some bugs to work out. Who wants to pay $1000 for an unreliable pistol?

The P-11 isn't a pocket pistol. The P-3AT is. Also the PPK/S a Colt Mustang. all 380. Only 9mm for pocket cost 1000 bucks. Good luck. I perfer the PPK/S for pockey carry .

The P-3at/p-32 would be easiest to conceal.
A J-frame would be the most reliable.

I suggest a KelTec P3at for pocket carry. VERY concealable. Practice a lot so you can put the .380 round on target with multiple hits.

The Kel-Tec is exceptionally accurate, If you practice. I would NEVER sell my Kel-Tec P3AT, unless I were offered enough to buy 2 Kel-Tecs P3ATs to replace it.

BUY THE HARD CHROME MODEL!!!

I did, and I have no regrets. At present, I am putting mine through an semi-"abuse" test. I am adding lubrication, but not cleaning to see how long it can go with zero failures of any form. I did this with a Glock 17 and made well over 3,000 rounds with 0 failures of any form. My Kimber Warrior will go only 100 rounds with "Win Clean" ammo, and that's it. With Speer Lawman ammo, the Warrior begins to fail at 70 rounds at best. My Colt Series 70 reproduction went easily 3,000 as well. And I am off topic? Nope.

At present the little Kel-Tec is up to just south of 500 rounds. Due to its considerable recoil, I will take my time doing this test. But, the fact of 500 rounds with never a failure is something to boast about.

What does this have to do with your question? Everything! People say small pistols are not reliable. Bull hockey! Sure they can be--they can also be trash, like any full size. To date, I literally trust my life to my Kel-Tec

By the way, while my P3AT will fire anything accurately, I carry Winchester Ranger in it. I use it as my 3rd back-up. I carry a 45 ACP as primary, a 9MM as back up, and the .380 as the 3rd pistol. 4th back-up is a NAA .22 Mag. mini revolver.

Edit to add: Be certain to purchase the clip to carry it conveniently.

on the subject of p3at accuracy well a pic can be worth a paragraph. I should note i also own and love a Kahr pm9, but in wrangler type jeans it is just a bit big for comfortable pocket carry . in cargo type shorts it is fine as a pocket gun . the p3at works in virtualy anything with pockets tho lol

The P3AT is not an option. Shot a friends and that little thing is obnoxious. I don't have a problem pocket carrying a G26 so I doubt the P11 being lighter and smaller will be a problem either. Lighter is mostly what I'm looking for.

I used to think the P11 was too big for a pocket. But, it depends on the size of the pocket. It's very light and I've found two models of affordable jeans whose front pockets swallow the P11. The Levis carpenters jeans and the new Wrangler cargo jeans have large enough pockets. Any pocket I can put my M85UL in, I can put the P11 in easier. It's not that heavy or thick. It's only 1.0" thick, just 0.1" wider than the new PF9 and carries up to 13 rounds, though mine is loaded with 11 (10 round mags). The PF9 will be 12 ounces to the P11s 14, woopie, two whole ounces.

I used to carry only IWB, but I've found pocket carrying either the revolver or the P11 is much more comfy. I don't even notice the gun during the day, but it's there and ready. I have a pocket holster for it.

If the pant pocket is small, the P3 AT will be a good choice, though. It is significantly smaller than the smallest affordable 9mm. I don't even consider the Rohrbaugh an option considering the exorbitant price.

Mcgunner, you and I are on the same page.

Isn't the PF9 a single stack? How can it carry 10rds?

MCgunner
June 6, 2006, 08:32 PM
No, the P11 is a double stack, what I have. It has a 10 round mag with 12 round flush fit available. The PF9 will indeed have less capacity, thinking 8 round mag, but that might not be right, might be one or two less.

I've checked out the width of the PF9 single stack vs the P11, only 0.1" I ain't givin' up the rounds for that. I have been shooting a P11 for 9 years now and it's very accurate and reliable. It has a long 8.5 lb trigger and the PF9 is supposed to be shorter travel and about 7 lbs I think. The lighter trigger will win friends from those who don't like long DAs like the P11, I reckon. I'm very used to my P11 and shoot it well, though. There is no difference in height and length measurements between the new PF9 and the P11, only 0.1" narrower and 2 ounces lighter.

My preference is a Kimber Ultra Carry II or any other 3" 1911. 8 rounds of .45 ACP packs a heck of a wallop. It rides in an Andrews Pocket Holster ( www.andrewsleather.com ). It rides well, conceals beautifully and draws like a dream.

Here is my pocket rig:

http://www.hedleyholsters.com/images/kahrmp92.jpg

9mm
7 rounds
single stack
reliable
Has eaten several different HPs - golden sabres, hydrashoks, gold dots
More I shoot it, the more I like it

And it's light and can easily fit most pockets.

Otherwise, snag the P-11 is not a pocket pistol - get the P-380 or P32.

For the record, I haven't had a problem pocket-carrying my Kahr PM-9. It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but it is incredibly comforting.

My PM9 has been quite a comfortable CCW for pocket carry.

In Dockers or jeans, it disappears.
