I got a chance to take the 870 out yesturday and put some slugs through it. A lot of fun. With a smooth bore and Remington Sluggers what kind of groups should one expect at 50 yards with a 20 in barrel. I'm pretty new to this so any information would be great!

TIA

I'm getting around 3 to 5 inches with 5 slugs offhand with an 18" barrel at 50 yds. (870)

With slug of choice, either of mine will do 2 1/2" at 50 yards from the bench. One is smoothbore, no choke, the other has a rifled choke tube.

That qualifies as minute of deer shoulder, 45R.

Don a wearable recoil pad, sit down at the bench and group test until one slug is noticeably tighter grouping rhan the rest. Buy as much of that one as you can afford. All 12 gauge slugs work....

Dave-
I had about 35 slugs sitting around when I took the shotgun out. The boys at the rifle range looked at me like I was crazy when I pulled the shotgun out. Hehehehe the look was priceless. I shot about 10 shots offhand to see how they would group. They were about 1 1/2 feet high from POA but the groups werent bad. I didnt have the tools at the time to bring the rifle sight down. I'll bench the shotgun next time and bring an allen wrench. At 1 1/2 feet high how many clicks on the Remington rifle barrel should I drop that rear sight. (backwards to go down and forward to go up??)

Damfino how many clicks,45R. Run it as far up as you can, then count the clicks as you run it all the way down. Run it back up half the clicks and start there. Start at 25 yards, depending on a lot of things one click SHOULD move things 1/4-1/2". Same with windage.

Once you're on paper and zeroed at 25, kick it back to 50 and start testing for group.

Nice thing about sighting in a slug gun--you don't need binoculars to tell you where you're hitting.
