Well, I have learned a rifle I had bought was lost in shipment by UPS. To wit:
MERCHANDISE IS MISSING. UPS WILL NOTIFY THE SENDER WITH ADDITIONAL DETAILS.;ALL MERCHANDISE MISSING, EMPTY CARTON WAS DISCARDED. UPS WILL NOTIFY THE SENDER WITH DETAILS OF THE DAMAGE
So, is this something the sender/seller needs to deal with, or do I need to file a police/ATF report, or have my FFL do it? It was being sent interstate as a modern firearm (it may have been pre-1898, but the original date was worn off) to the FFL dealer. Was it right/proper for UPS to discard the carton? Based on reading some past posts, I lean towards "no way", but I have no idea what's right in this sort of situation.
It's not hugely ($1000+) valuable, and it's a single shot .22, so it's probably not going to wind up in a killing spree, but still, it's a little alarming. I'm actually too surprised to be angry right now.

Since you cannot have a firearm delivered to you directly without an FFL, it will probably be one of the FFL holders responsiblity. However, I would contact local law enforcement first before contacting the ATF. No need to give the rabid dogs something to bite until you're sure you absolutely have to.
Being there should be insurance on it, you should be able to recoup your funds and find another rifle.
I had a friend that kept getting his car parts stolen from the UPS (~20 years ago) shipping process and they eventually put an RFID or the like in it and caught the perps that were stealing from the UPS. It happened to be some UPS employees in his case. You might have UPS check whether or not this theft has some commonality for them like a common point in the delivery process that they can correlate with other thefts or damaged packages.

Had the same thing happen here but it was the USPS items ordered just would not show up, fortuantely I started ordering COD so they had to investigate as they were out the funds, Yep is was a employe.:neener:

All on the sender the FFL will have to make out an interstate shipment loss statement and get a case # as that is what will have to be recorded in his bound book.
More than likley it is stolen. We had one go missing 3 months ago when reported to the ATF they forwarded the call to the local ATF office. 10 hrs latter the off duty UPS man delivered it in his own car to the C&R. All due to the dillegent work of the ATF agent.

You need do nothing, and you don't need to notify your FFL except to say that the expected shipment will not arrive. UPS will take care of any reports that need to be made and notify the sender so that the loss can be reported by them also. The sender should refund your money and will be reimbursed by UPS and/or insurance.

SUpposed to have been delivered to an address not real. If it was not for the ATF and the City police it would have been gone. Since when do ups drivers use thier own cars.
From the city detective they have been working a ring of thiefs out of that ups site, Atf was familar of it also. I never heard the full outcome but the chances the driver was arrested seemed high.

Thanks gents. I contacted the seller, he/his FFL will be doing the work with UPS. It was insured, so I'll be getting the money back (I would presume, as I expect the rifle is long gone now). The receiving FFL knows it's gone missing. I suppose the thief thought it was some slick battle rifle instead of a hundred year old trainer, I'd be surprised if they actually knew what it was.
Had something similar happen with UPS a couple of years ago - bought a new Dell that they shipped to the wrong address, I don't think they even bothered trying to get it back. Dell just sent a replacement (which they tried to charge me for, of course).
