Gun shop find...Revolver timing?

Found a S&W 10-8 with 4" heavy barrel in the back row of a gunshop "used iron" shelf, for $130...it had spent too much time in the original S&W leather holster and the bluing was badly worn...white stripes everywhere, even on the matte finished top of the frame. Bore was clean and sharp, and it locked up as tight as a new one from the next showcase over, so I bought it and reblued it (Wonder Blue), and put a Hogue monogrip on it. It now looks great, and shoots fine, for a total cost of about $150. A friend suggested I have the timing checked or have it re-timed...

How do I check the timing on this gun? What do I look for? It rotates, locks up tight, and shoots accurately, and there's a very tight fit between front of cylinder and forcing cone. The hammer block safety works properly preventing the hammer from striking unless the trigger is fully depressed. What else should I look for?

Also, how can I determine how old it is...the 10-8 is the current model, but this one looked like it had been carried a lot more than used...the wood grips were worn nearly smooth.

I've cleaned the rubbed-off bluing out of the holster on the theory that it would be as hard or harder than the new bluing and act as an abrasive...and re-oiled the leather liner in hopes that it won't rub the blue off as quickly. Anyone try that with any luck?

Doug
