I just acquired a Colt Official Police revolver. From some online sources I gather that the 8899xx serial number means it was made in 1963.

Under the grips on the left side of the frame it is marked INS. Anybody know what that means?

That's what I thought, but I don't know if they ever had Colt revolvers or if they marked them this way.

Hunt up Bart Skelton in the membership listing and email him. He's BP; he might know.

Unfortunately, his profile is set to disallow emails. Well, maybe he'll stumble upon this thread...

I used to think that the INS stamp was the Immigration and Naturalization Service, but one of our more knowledgeable Colt authorities says that it was a Colt inspection stamp. I now believe he is right.

edit: to correct typo.

Right.

The"INS" stamp under the grips is a common inspection stamp found on many Mid-frame Colt DA revolvers in the 60's and early 70's.
