Time to UNLOAD, need some advice

Hi all, I have not stopped in in a while due to failing health.
It is now time to start unloading some of the weapons I have had for many years and I have not kept up with prices. I am not a dealer, just a retired LEO and I have to deal with the local shops here in NY to stay with in the laws.

Can any one give me some ideas what I should expect to be offered or at what point I should say no and move on to other outlets on a few of my guns.

I do hope I am not asking an illegal question or placing this in the wrong place.

Here is what I have and will be looking to sell outright.

2- S&W Model 36 Chief Specials, 5 shot, Square Butt, Bobbed hammers, 2" BBL. Rarely ever fired or carried and both in very nice condition.

1- S&W Model 10-8, 4" bull BBL, fixed sights, never fired and still in box.

1- Glock Model 21, 40 S&W, brand new in the box with hang tags still attached. 2 mags, high capacity! Gun was bought before any bans came into affect. Had trijacon night sites but they have died over the past ten or 12 years.

Wife is on my case to do this so she does not have to. I just need some good advice so I am not completely blind sided or taken advantage of.

I would appreciate open discussions about this here and would prefer not to be hounded with offers because I don't have a dealer who is willing to do the paper work to get these off my permit and transfered properly.

Thank you.

Gary

First, I'd like to say how sorry I am your health is not what you'd like it to be. I hope things go well for you.

That said, anytime I have something to sell, I'll go to, say, gunsamerica and find the item closest to my own.

If there are several, I'll average them. Since whenever I'm selling a gun it's not to make a profit, I'll usually price it on the low end so I don't have to fool with it.

Anyway, you might consider that. Here are a couple of sites for your consideration:

http://www.gunlist.net/

http://www.gunsamerica.com

Oh, and since you're trying to sell Smiths, you might also want to ask over at:

http://smith-wessonforum.com

Best of luck.

Thank you P&R. Good advice for sure as it is always best to do these things with some current knowledge.
A buddy passed on a while back and his wife had a local dealer handle the gun disposal. I was appaled by what he gave her for some very fine rifles and this is why my wife is on my case.
I will be around for quite a while I hope but my eyes are failing much quicker then I expected and the shooting sports are no longer in the picture for me.

I'm sorry to hear about your health problems...

Now if we can clear something up. A GLOCK 21 (http://www.teamglock.com/Glock-Buyers-Guide/Glock-21.htm) is a full size .45 Auto (ACP).

If your pistol is indeed a .40 S&W it is likely a GLOCK 22 (http://www.teamglock.com/Glock-Buyers-Guide/Glock-22.htm) or GLOCK 23 (http://www.teamglock.com/Glock-Buyers-Guide/Glock-23.htm).

The 22 is a full sized model and the 23 is a compact.

It also makes a difference what "generation" your GLOCK is. See here for details: http://www.glockfaq.com/gunsmithing.htm#frame

Its a good thing I have you guys to keep me straight!
It is a Glock 22 in .40 S&W and it appears to be the second generation model in that it has no finger humps but it does have stippeling on the front and rear of the grip.

I bought both a 22 and 23 shortly before the capacity ban went into effect and I added the LazerMax lazer to the 23 so I never even took the 22 out of the box.
I might have to hang on to this one for a while as it appears it is not even worth what I paid for it even though it is NIB. Certainly not one of my better investments.
I also have a real nice Wildey .475 Magnum but I don't have a boat in need of an anchor!

Thanks guys, I do appreciate all the help.

gamalot: i recently sold a 36, LNIB, for $325, so i'd put yours in the 250-275 range if you want to move them.
Model 10 about the same. $450-475 on the Glock. Dealers won't give you this, so I'd suggest private sales if thats possible in your state.

Thanks ULF. I think the Glock will stay with me till I go because I paid over $500 for it around 12-15 years ago and it is still in its box. The 36s are both in great condition and I paid little more then $100 for each of them in the early 70s.
NY is a tough state for doing private sales as everything must go thru a FFL dealer. Most used to do it for free if you were a regular customer or $10-20 bucks if not. Now I understand most don't even want to be bothered or they charge outrageous fees.
Fortunately I do have a couple of nephews who show some promise and as long as they keep their noses clean I would have less problems giving them to them before I would allow a dealer to rape me for them.
I did go to two shops today and both were pretty adamant that they are not buying any used hand guns at all because they are over loaded with them and not much is moving. Neither shop had any customers in them when I was there so I guess I can't blame them at all.
Also fortunate that there is no rush and while in the safe they don't eat much! LOL . The wife already has her CCL so she can legally keep them all but as she puts it, " I need 20 hand guns like I need another hole in my head"

I am also a vintage stereo collector and could probably pipe in the music for the next Woodstock Concert yet she is quite happy with an all in one boom box.

Thanks guys.

Does NY law preclude you from selling the handguns to someone out of state? If not I would simply take good pictures and list them myself on this and other online forums. So long as you use a legal carrier and ship them to an FFL I would think you would be fine. May be an option since selling them in your home state seems to be such a problem.

That said, I would more wholeheartedly approve of keeping them in the family and passing them down to heirs if you don't need the money.

There is a Smith & Wesson forum at smith-wessonforum.com with a classified section. I suspect that people there would give you a better price for the J frames and Model 10 than you would otherwise get. Granted, they would have to be shipped FFL to FFL, but they can do that by US postal service and it doesn't necessarily have to be outrageous.

I can relate to your situation as I have more than I need. I will probably just give some of mine away but some will need to be sold eventually.

Good luck.

Just remember that a dealer is going to give you wholesale at best.

can't help with the prices, though i'd sure like to have a chief's special. i've got a s&w 4" 38spl and my buddy has an old 6" police positive which is cool. mainly, i was wondering what vintage stereo rig you've got. i have a mac 1700 receiver with jbl lancer speakers. i also have an old harmon kardon with wharfdale speakers and a pair of german made grundig speakers as well. old guns and old stereos make for fun hobbies.

The FFL to FFL is the hard part about out of state sales. It is even hard for in state ones if the dealers don't want to work with you.
Think I have a friend I have not seen in quite a while who might help me out.

I collect the big Sansui G 9000 receivers and all my speakers are the large Altecs, 14s, 15s, 19s. Don't know why but vintage guns and vintage stereos seem to be the best there is.

I sure understand the part about dealers paying wholesale as they have to make a living also. But Buddy's wife had three very nice rifles in 308, 30-06 and 270, Win Model 88, Win Model 70 and Rem 700 and all with nice scopes and mid 60s vintage. Dealer gave her $500 for all three. I call this Robbery!

Why do you have to ship FFL to FFL? Is that a state law? As far as I know it is legal for an individual to ship to an FFL provided they follow the law in choice of carriers.

Retire, move to Texas, burn your NY "permits" and buy/sell/trade them at gun shows or web auctions.

I am getting on in age myself, so in some respects I understand your dilemma Best wish with your health.

As Pinned and R. mentioned, thats the way I figure out current value. Gunbroker.com is another good place to check.

That is a good point and I really am not sure of the laws here in this regard. I suspect that for me to get a gun removed from my permit here in NY that it would have to have paper work submitted by a NY FFL dealer.
If anyone is aware of the laws and can clear this up I would appreciate any solid info on this.

As for the prices, I think they are right around what has been mentioned above and I did a little checking locally which is in the same ball park.

Went to Texas once, had a real blast and enjoyed your state but would never want to live there. Way too hot for this NE country boy who likes sitting on a frozen lake waiting for a tip up flag to go up.
