I'd appreciate knowing the date of Mfg of a S&W 15 Combat Masterpiece #444xx. Thanks.

George, look more closely at the butt of the gun. The serial number is there, and should have at least 1 alphabetic prefix to the numbers you've given. S&W went to alpha prefixes on K-frames in 1942 with the "Victory Model" M&P. Report back when you get it....

From the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, 1951, Serial numbers from K104048 to serial number K136690. Your Smith and Wesson was made in 1951.

Just FYI, the model numbering scheme didn't start until 1957. What you have is what some refer to is a "pre model 15". Until '57, S&W sold their revolvers by names like "Military and Police", ".38 Combat Masterpiece" (that's yours, btw), and "Hiighway Patrolman". Kinda miss those terms...

Is that the book by Jim Supica?
Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. Is this the best gun website or what?
