HEADLINE: FIELD NOTES - Ohio 7-year-old bags turkey Grand Slam
BYLINE: DAVE HENDERSON
BODY:
Joey Sears of Spencer was 10 years old last spring when he was honored as the youngest hunter to score the Grand Slam of turkey hunting, taking all four North American sub-species of wild turkeys in one season.
Joey was slightly younger than his older sister, Jeana, who accomplished the feat as a 10-year-old in 1999 -- but was not nearly so young as an adolescent Ohio hunter who also turned the trick.
Hunter Black, who has been giving turkey hunting seminars and winning calling contests despite being only 7 years old, scored the Grand Slam last spring and is in Mexico right now trying to add the Gould and Ocellated sub-species to the list, which would give him a World Slam.
A news release from Federal Cartridge noted that Hunter's Grand Slam achievement will be recorded with the Guinness Book of World Records, where he will beat the standard "by three years."
That reference was probably taken from an old magazine account of Jeana Sears' achievement since the Sears family applied with the Guinness folks in 1999. They were turned down, however, because the record keepers would not accept a listing where killing animals was involved.
